This is what happens when it’s too warm in February. We have highs this week of 78 and 80 degrees. The trees thing springtime has arrived.
That’s a plum tree loaded with blooms. The sun was going down and the woods behind me were blocking most of the light so I couldn’t get a good picture but it’s loaded with blooms.
This is a pear. And look at that glorious blue sky! This is the most blooms I’ve ever seen on a pear. We have yet to produce more than 1 pear per year and we must have 9 pear trees.
All the peaches are in full bloom. This is a young one we just planted in January.
The apple tree will be blooming by the weekend. The pluot is in full bloom and this is our low for one night next week!
Frustrating and disappointing but Mother Nature is in charge and there’s nothing we can do. Our water lines will have to be drained before the temps drop below freezing and the well in the orchard is solar powered so once the sun goes down, there’s no water out there anyway. Otherwise, we could spray them and hope to save the blooms.

This is a crazy spring for us here in Arizona. The high temp in Phoenix the other day was 47. Our normal average temp. for this day is 71. We also have had snow and not just in the mountains. My husband’s truck had snow on it the other morning. Crazy, crazy, crazy!

I vaguely remember feeling bad for things that bloomed too soon.
Over here, I just saw pictures from someone driving north from LA. The almond orchards are just clouds of white! I don’t think they have much danger of freezing, even inland as they are.

My memory is not very good, but I think that we used to keep the sprinklers going all night when we had the garden and a freeze warning. Of course that was veggies and not trees. But I would think that one of those yard sprinklers with the fan type spray would work. Kind of like leaving the faucets running on a trickle all night to prevent the lines from freezing. Please take this with a large grain of salt.

I used to fret about my cherry trees each spring when they bloomed. I always hoped we would make it through without any hard freezes. Some years we did, and some we didn’t. Like you said, we can’t control nature. On the other hand, at the moment, highs in the upper 70’s sound soooooo good right now! We are looking at highs in the 50’s this week, with a high of 30 and the possibility of snow this weekend. Booo!

50’s sounds wonderful!

Maybe it will change by then, or maybe it won’t bother them. I thought our 4 days of freezing just as the Bradfords were blooming would ruin that, but I noticed today that they are all white and popping open again. I’ll hope that for your real pears. I saw the Bradfords blooming all across Texas last week.
