Flowers have never had much priority in my gardens. I love growing fruits and vegetables but I also love pretty flowers. There are only so many hours in a day and the vegetable garden takes about all the energy I can muster but yesterday I was wishing for a few flowers and decided to make myself a little flower garden.

Kinda out in the middle of the yard are these two 4 x 8 raised beds. I figured I could put one small bed along the 8′ south side of one, and another one on the north side of the other bed.
Vince was busy in his shop and I was determined to do this on my own. but he came out and used long nails to keep the two landscape timbers stacked and, since we’re going to have a lot of rain coming up, I just covered it all with straw and will plant after the rains stop. Some will be seeds and some will be plants.
These will have a few flowers but they will mostly be my “apothecary” garden. I will plant feverfew, “self heal”, astralagus, lemon balm, comfrey, yarrow and calendula. I may end up digging up at the ends of beds and planting a few other plants. I would love to plant borage but I will probably plant that in pots so I can move them around to wherever I’m having but issues. I would also like to have asters and zinnias but I don’t want to take on too much. During June and July, it’s about all I can do to take care of the vegetables.

My late husband loved zinnias. He planted them almost every year and cut them to put on the table.

That’s exactly what I was thinking . . flowers on the table but I would also love to go outside and lots of pretty flowers. I’ll be happy with just a few.

I’m not a flower grower either, but last year I had so few bees that I will plant some lavender and marigolds in hopes of tempting more bees to my garden.

We definitely need to entice the bees and provide food and water for them. We have fruit trees, just had redbuds and now dogwoods bloom. I know the bees liked the redbuds and I assume they like dogwoods but am not sure. They also come around for blooming veggies but I think if I were a bee, I’d rather be sucking on nectar from flowers! 🙂
