You may or may not remember the story about how Chad ended up with Speck. Here’s the story about their Speck. Chad said he got him on February 1, 2015.
Since Day 1, he’s been one to run like a bat out of “you know where” the minute he gets out. At their last house, they had a regular height fence and Chad let him back there one afternoon. He was over the fence and gone in a heartbeat. You wouldn’t believe how fast he goes when he gets out.
Chad, Addie and Nicole are very careful about keeping the door shut and not letting him escape. I know too but yesterday as we were getting ready to leave to go to Addie’s school, I opened the door to go out, turned to talk to one of them and out he went. He was truly like lightning. He crossed the street, I was holding my breath that he didn’t get hit. Nicole grabbed the truck keys and Chad and I went off after him. He ran to the park across the street. There were kids and a couple of families out playing. Chad hollered “He’s friendly . . try to grab his collar!” He will stop and let people pet him but when he sees Chad, he’s off again. It happened to be the wife of one of Chad’s friends here . . the guy Chad met when we first moved here. This is Chad when he was in their wedding in 2009.
Oh, how cute he was! Anyway, one of the ladies in the part was this wife. Just as she went to grab Speck, he saw Chad and he took off. We drove around and saw a trail leading off into another subdivision. Chad said . . I’ll bet he went that way and then Chad saw him . . using the bathroom. Chad was able to run up behind a building, surprise him and grab him.
We got home and Addie was crying . . Speck was lost. She was mad at me for letting him out. Nicole said “Addie .. it was an accident. You’ve done it. I’ve done it. We’ve all done it!” Addie said “Daddy hasn’t. He doesn’t make mistakes!” Oh, please!
You can bet I won’t let it happen again. She would never have forgotten it and probably never forgiven me if we had not gotten him back.

My sister in Colorado has a dog like that. Luckily they have a fenced-in yard to run in. However, several months ago he went bounding off the back porch into the yard and immediately came up lame. He had actually torn his (equivalent of) rotator cuff in one back leg.. (like our knee) The surgery was over $1200, plus all the extra visits to the vet, etc. He obviously didn’t learn though, because as soon as he could manage, he climbed the steps to the upstairs in the house… He wasn’t supposed to be climbing stairs at all… I’d never heard of such a thing, but I guess some dogs have more energy, but not always common sense…. 🙂

We had a “runner” too. My husband’s favorite dog. Her story didn’t end so well. We never found her after one “running” event, even thought we looked high and low and posted flyers and everything. My husband was devastated. He couldn’t enjoy Thanksgiving. He was afraid she was in need and he wasn’t there to take care of her. (sad face)

My huskies were runners too. They are bred to pull sleds and run so that is what they do. So happy Speck got to come home.
