Vince and I are staying home this 4th of July weekend. Chad is going camping. He’s off work today through Sunday and he isn’t about to miss an opportunity to fish! Not sure where they decided to go but with the cost of gas, I heard the trip down to Jasper, AR wasn’t happening and they’re staying closer to home.
One thing I don’t want to do this weekend is spend all my time in the kitchen so I decided to bake some different breads today so we can have sandwiches. We’re having hamburgers on the grill tonight, one day Vince will probably want brats and otherwise — it’s sandwiches for us this weekend.
I made a batch of dough for pita pockets (that’s what’s in the bowl). I froze half of it and put the other half in the fridge. I’ll make those the same day we eat them.
The loaf on the left is Hummus Bread, made with fresh ground hard white wheat. It needed 1 cup of hummus so I made a big batch and it will be nice to have to snack on over the weekend. The loaf on the right is Toasted Sesame & Sunflower Seed Bread, made with fresh ground hard red winter wheat.
Here’s the result! Both turned out great! Chad just gave me the best compliment! When we lived in Owensboro, before I started baking all our bread, we bought most of it at Great Harvest Bread. They have some of the very best breads. Chad took a slice off each of the loaves I made today and said “Mom! This tastes like something we would’ve bought at Great Harvest.” Guess I’ll be making these two recipes again.
