I talk about Oscar and Cooper so much, I feel like you all love them. It’s ok if you don’t . . just don’t tell me.
Yesterday I was so hung up on those bills, that I forgot the best part about the visit. First, Oscar weighed only 16 pounds. That’s amazing. The most a mini-dachshund should weigh, according to the “rules”, is 11 pounds. A standard dachshund should weigh no more than 32 pounds. Then there’s the “tweenie”, which is an “in between size” – not an official class of doxies but every one I’ve ever had falls into the tweenies category. Cooper is as tiny as I would want my Dachshund to be and he weighs about 13 pounds. He is the smallest one I’ve ever had. He’s just dainty . . in size, not in any other way! Oscar is a bigger, much stronger and more muscular dog than Cooper will ever be.
At Oscar’s first annual type visit, he was a bit over one year old and he weighed 21. The vet said “He’s very muscular and he isn’t overweight but let’s not let him gain any more weight.” At his second annual, he weighed 18 pounds and the vet was thrilled. Yesterday he weighed 16 pounds. He seems much heavier to me compared to Cooper but I’m very happy with that weight for him.
The other thing . . he was so sweet all day. I hate giving him the meds and I will not give them to him except when he’s going to the vet but while we were still in the vet, I was holding him and he had his head on my shoulder. He’s not a snuggly dog and that was so nice having him snuggle like that. All evening, even up until I went to bed last night, he wanted to sit on my lap with his head against my chest. I kept saying “This is how you’re supposed to act!” I doubt I get much loving today but it was sure good while it lasted.
As far as Cooper, he will be 2 in July and I do believe he is finally trustworthy in the house. He still doesn’t ring the bell to go out. He just stands at the end of the sofa and stares at me til I notice him. I know to look up every now and then if he isn’t on my lap. He has not had any accidents (though I never thought they were accidents) in his crate in several weeks.
If I leave the room, they both have to go into their crates. That will probably always be how we do it because these two seem to be a bit more destructive than any I have had before. Cooper will still tear up anything he can find. Oscar still loves to chew (computer cords, the corners on plastic totes, the edges of the furniture, etc.) Cooper wants to shred things. Oscar wants to gnaw.

I’ve always loved Oscar but he hasn’t been a loving dog. Cooper is a snuggler but the past few months, Oscar has gotten more loving and snuggly and I love it
