The new freeze dryer vacuum pump arrived today. I had been watching the tracking so I was expecting it. Thank goodness they sent it Fed Ex! Not what this post is about but it’s funny/sad . . I sent a package on January 29. I sent it priority mail, paid for the shipping at home, printed the label, took it to the post office and handed it to one of the very nice employees who all know my name . . probably not in a good way. Yesterday (8 days after I delivered it to the post office), the tracking showed it was still here due to “inclement weather”. What? We’ve had beautiful weather. Last weekend we worked outside in short sleeves. I called the post office. They assured me the package was not still at the post office. In fact, they said ALL packages have to leave here at the end of the day. “We cannot hold outgoing packages overnight.” They knew exactly where the holdup was and it’s the post office where I had a package sit for 11 days recently. I guess the weather FINALLY got nice enough that the package could move — it departed for Kansas City today. Is that crazy? The funny thing is that I took two packages to the post office that day. I guess the “inclement weather” wasn’t so bad for that package because it went through the post office where the other one was held up and was delivered three days after mailing.
Anyway, the pump arrived at almost 6 p.m., Vince tackled the job, got it all hooked up, ran the vacuum test and it was PERFECT!

It’s pretty! Love the color! It’s a different pump than the one I had before. There are apparently three “levels” of pumps. My first two were the bottom level. This is the medium level. Vince did all the discussions with Harvest Right so what I’m saying is just what I got from Vince but Harvest Right had a bunch of pumps that had a wrong part or a bad part in them and they had to change the parts out so they couldn’t sell them as “new” so they were greatly discounted. You know Vince — we got two because they were on sale. 🙂 That should get me through my freeze drying years without having to buy another vacuum pump.

I was in the middle of a load when the pump went out. Those trays went in the freezer so I was happy to get them out of the freezer and back into the freeze dryer. Two trays of eggs, two trays of ground beef with a bit of rosemary filling in an empty spot where I didn’t have enough ground beef defrosted to fill the tray.
So, so happy to have the freeze dryer back up and running. Thank you, Vince!!

Too funny—I live in the Seattle area where USPS is great and I always groan when I see a vendor has used FedEx!

Lucky you. I asked the post office lady if someone was working on getting that other place straightened out and she laughed. I think she said the distribution centers are not part of the USPS or USPS doesn’t have any say over what happens with them – something like that. What I got from it was that they’re pretty much free to do whatever they want with no ramifications.
