Several have asked about the buckets Vince made for the garden. This is the Youtube Vince found and with the guy’s permission, I’m sharing a picture, as well as his video and Vince’s notes. Watch the video first, then read Vince’s notes. If you have questions, please ask. Be very specific. Vince and I speak different languages. 🙂 I will read him your questions and type his answer exactly as he dictates the response.
Here’s the video:
I’m not real sure if this picture is in the video but this is one the guy sent Vince:
Here’s what Vince wrote:
I made a few changes see below.
Measure the diameter of the quart cup one inch from the top! Make a circle template from cardboard that is exactly this diameter measurement. Trace the outline of the cardboard template directly onto the bottom of the top bucket. This is hole that will be cut out. Please read the next sentence!
Because my quart cup was brittle I burned holes in it with a soldering iron instead of drilling. Place many 3/16″ holes in the quart cup and 5 to 6 holes around top lip of this cup.
Drill 10 to 12 – 3/16″ holes in the bottom of top bucket. Leave a spot for fill tube hole.
Drill a 1-1?4″ hole for fill tube ( get hole saw). Center this 1-1/4″ hole between the large hole and the edge of the bucket.
The quart cup is properly inserted when about an inch of it is above the bottom of the grow (top) bucket and 4 inches of the cup are below the bottom of the grow (top) bucket.
Another check of proper fit is checking to make sure there are approximately 2 inches between the top of the outer bucket and the rim of the inner bucket.
Three inches from bottom of top bucket drill 1” hole for drain grommet. Drain tube is 1?2 diameter x 3″ long.
Position bottom of the quart cup slightly above the bottom of the lower bucket.
Cut fill tube 24 in with a 45 degree cut on one end. Drill a couple of 1?4 holes in the bottom of the fill tube opposite the slant cut.
Use 4 – 1?2″ self tapping screws to hold the top bucket in place. These screws can be replaced with 1?2 bolts and nuts to eliminate sharp points in the bucket.
Add perlite to top bucket even with the top of the quart cup.
Fill with potting soil stop 3” from top of bucket
Fill water reservoir and saturate soil (slowly soak) with water until the water comes out drain tube.
