After I wrote about the mouse yesterday, a reader wrote about a roach and it reminded me of a funny story.
My parents live in Louisiana and snakes will come right into the houses. Most everyone I know in Louisiana has had a snake in the house. We had a stinking cottonmouth in our house once!
My parents’ neighbors had 5 or 6 kids and they had a nanny who took care of the kids. She was scared of everything . . kinda like me. One day, she sent one of the kids over to my dad’s to come help her . . there was a snake in the house. Dad grabbed whatever he thought he might need to get the snake out of the house with chopping up the carpet. He got over there and the said the nanny had all the kids in the bedroom and none of them would come out. She told dad . . it’s in the living room, in the corner next to the TV. “Please, Mr. Billy, get that snake out of here.”
Dad walked over there and it was one of the kids’ belts all curled up next to the TV. Dad picked it up, took it to the bedroom and showed her. He said even knowing it wasn’t a snake, she was still scared.
Once not too long ago, I saw what I thought was a bug on the wall and smashed it with my hand but it was a nail that had been left in the wall. That hurt and the “bug” didn’t feel a thing! 🙂

We unknowingly kicked a baby moccasin in the kitchen one evening while bringing in groceries. We didn’t even notice it until the cat started stalking it.

Your snake story reminded me of another story (like the roach…) I was student teaching and was on playground duty. One of the kids came running over to tell the other teacher and me there was a huge snake on the edge of the playground. (The school had a lot of wooded area around it). Being the “brave student teacher” aka “newbie sucker”, I got sent over to check it out. It turned out to be a jump rope. I think the kids were mostly trying to see if they could scare the student teacher…LOL I was just happy it wasn’t really a snake!

One of my boys came into the house this summer to tell me about the ENORMOUS lizard that had scared him in the yard. It was one of those three foot rubber things that they used to sell at Toys R Us that someone apparently left out in the bushes years ago and he’d forgotten about….
