Vince had ordered trees from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (because Missouri Conservation sells out of the good ones within minutes!).
They arrived today . . 100 trees. Hmmm . . we need more land! 🙂
He ordered silver leaf maples because we want those to plant along the property line in the back. The rest of these were trees I wanted:
Nannyberry – These make a bloom kinda like the elderberry blooms. Very pretty! They wll grow in full sun, part sun; they don’t need much water. They produce edible fruit that’s great for making most anything you could make with plums – jams, jellies, sauces, pudding, cake, etc.
Chinkapin Oak – I’m still not sure these are what I was thinking they would be. I believe what I was looking for may be called an Ozark Chinquapin but I don’t think that’s what these are.
Gooseberry – These are actually illegal to grow in some states! There are so many good recipes that can be made using gooseberries.
Forget the Gooseberries. We got Chokecherries.
Soon Vince will be very busy out planting trees but we will surely give some of them away. No way we have room for that many trees nor do we want that many trees on one acre.

Judy, I have learned something again from you today which I do most of the time.I did not know there were gooseberry trees. Growing up close to Roaring River State Park (in Mo) as a kid we picked gooseberries from bushes that were about 5 feet tall or so. Gooseberry pies made by my mother were one of my favorite foods. I haven’t had one in years. Not sure there are any of those bushes left on the farm I grew up on.

I think most are bushes but some are now “trees” so I’m not sure if it’s because they’re some kind of hybrid or what BUT . . I looked at the invoice. We talked about getting gooseberries but because you have to order 25 of each, we couldn’t get everything we wanted so we ended up ordering chokecherries instead of gooseberries.
Love the Roaring River area near the state park and I love The Filling Station in Cassville!

I hope you are giving some away. If you plant a hundred trees on your acre, you’ll be planting a forest! I would like to plant a few trees in my yard. I’ve had to remove so many over the years, I only have 3 left. (a Dogwood, a Holly tree, and a rather sickly looking Redbud. I’m afraid the Redbud is the next one I will have to have removed.

Of course we are giving away the extras.
