Last night I finished the knitting and weaving in the ends for Winterfell Cardi. This morning I soaked it and have it blocking.
Even with the blinds closed, in the room where I’m blocking it, there’s so much sunlight filtering through that the color is washed out.
In the photo below, the color is a bit better.
Once the sweater is dry, this is the ribbon I’ll use on the wrong side of the button band. I’ll sew it on by hand, sing a brown thread so hopefully it will not show on the right side. Then I’ll hand sew the buttons through the knitted button band and the ribbon. This should give enough stabilization so that the glass buttons won’t pull on the knitting and cause it to sag.
I started this sweater in May, 2018. I got it started at home and then took it with me to MO when Vince and I went. I was able to knit in the car but when we got home around the first of June, I set it aside and hardly worked on it. Sometimes picking up a project that has been sitting is the hardest part.
I love this sweater. The pattern was very easy. The yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh Sport. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with all things Madelinetosh these days. Their colors bleed like no other yarn I’ve ever used. I’m not a yarn dyer so I have no opinions on how to fix the problem on their end (I do know several things that will help on my end) but I buy and use plenty of other hand dyed yarns that do not bleed or, at least, not as bad as Madelinetosh. The only safe way I can use Madelinetosh if I’m using more than one color is to wash all the yarns over and over before using them and that is a pain, that especially for the price, I just refuse to do any more. I will use what I have of their yarn but I will buy no more. Bleeding wasn’t much of an issue for this yarn because there’s just one color involved and actually, it bled less than any of their yarns I’ve used recently.
I do love knitting with sport weight and DK weight yarn and I totally love the color of this yarn. The color is Dachshund and it has rich shades of brown, along with purple that fades to lavender.
It’s a good thing that’s a discontinued color because I’d definitely be ordering more of that one.

The sweater is absolutely gorgeous, and a lovely fall color.

Perfect ribbon choice! Looking forward to seeing your buttons. Your yarn shows that stitch pattern off perfectly.

I love this color too. Going to be so pretty on you!

The product quilters use for color retention is called Retayne, I think. I would think it would work with yarn dye too.

This is a beautiful sweater. Nicely done! I haven’t used much ‘Tosh’ yarn to experience bleeding of colours as I use more indie dyed yarns but as another commenter suggested, Retayne might be a good option. If it’s good enough to use on quilts, I would hazard a guess that it’s ok to use on wool.

Beautiful work! I love cables. I’m curious – how do you go about washing a yarn before you use it? I tried that ONCE and it resulted in such a tangled mess that I’ve never done it again. Do you hand wash it and lay it on a rack in the dryer? Thanks!
