This incident started because we’ve been watching the keto videos and one of them suggested the pH of urine should be more towards alkaline than acid. That prompted me to get my pH strips that I used for testing kombucha and test my urine. The scale on the container only goes to about 4.4 and it’s green. When I tested my urine, the strip was purple . . which would indicate about a 13 . . which would not be good.
Vince and I then had this conversation about my concerns.
Me: I just peed on a ph strip and it’s purple. I think there’s something wrong with me.
Vince: What kind of strip did you pee on?
Me: One for testing kombucha.
Vince: (looking at the bottle) These aren’t the right kind. You need a different one.
Me: Will you pee on one so I can see what color yours is?
Vince: NO!
Me: But, I’m worried something could be wrong with me.
Vince: You should worry about things that matter.
Me: What do YOU think I should be worried about?
Vince: What you’re going to cook for dinner tomorrow night.
Me: What if I’m dead by then?
Vince: So long as you get dinner cooked first . .
He was joking so don’t anyone think badly of him.
He did test his urine and it was purple too so, whatever is wrong, we both have it! 🙂
I think I’ll leave my urine testing to the professionals.

You guys sure you’re just not in diet caused ketosis?
Keto and Adkins call this “fat burning mode” and this type of ketosis is “healthy” rather than being caused by actual kidney disease. Diet driven ketosis is easily reversible by going back to a more balanced, than skewed, diet. But then the weight loss stops and weight gain again must be guarded against.
But don’t take my word…I’m just guessing from when I did Adkins to do weight loss about a decade ago and used test strips to see if I was “peeing” in ketosis caused by keeping my carbs consistently under 50g per day. It took me about a month to see this change in the test strips. I did lose significant weight and was not hungry at all while on this regiment. The craving for carbs vanished after about 2 calendar weeks, too.
You need to research this more fully to put your minds at ease.

We are not in ketosis at the current time – several trips out to eat and another trip this coming week so we’ll get back into ketosis later next week. We check our ketones with a blood test. Checking ketones in urine is not a very accurate way to check for several reasons but once you’ve been in ketosis for a short time, your body starts to use the ketones so you can be in ketosis and it doesn’t register in the urine test. I keep my carbs below 15 but we will see the change in the blood test within four or five days. I’m not going to say the craving for carbs vanishes because I always want a Dr. Pepper but that’s a whole separate addiction. Our craving for food in general diminished within a few days. When we’re back on the keto diet full time, we fast 18/6 – fast 18 hours and eat during a 6 hour window every day unless we’re doing longer fasts.
No research needed. We’ve ordered ph strips that are specifically for testing urine.

Judy: But, I’m worried something could be wrong with me.
Tricia: No need to worry anymore. There is Definitely something wrong with you!
Some things are TMI, Judy. At least you crack me up while you are grossing me out!

That is way too funny! LOL (just make sure you cook dinner before you kick the bucket…) LOL

That’s hilarious. Your conversations always make me literally laugh out loud. One would think pH is pH, but maybe not. Maybe urine is a different chemical that needs a special strip. =)
