Folks who are more familiar with cats that I am may not be surprised by Cat’s behavior but in my opinion, that is one crazy cat.
When she first started hanging around, Vince took a really big box, fixed it all up for her and put it way up under the carport at the edge of the shop. The entrance is kinda hidden and she goes in there if it’s raining and she can’t get inside the shop. This trip, when we left, it was probably very traumatic for her because (1) The entire time we were gone, about 10 days, she could not get in the shop. Vince usually opens the doors as soon as he gets up and she goes upstairs and sleeps all day. (2) My car was gone. She sleeps on top of my car. (3) Vince, her favorite human, was gone.
When we got home, she was inside the box. We heard her scurrying out. She ran off . . very sneaky like she thought we didn’t see her. We unpackaged the car. Vince washed the bugs off. I took care of the chickens and checked on the garden. We were outside, off and on, for several hours. Cat must have made 20 circles around the house. Each time, she made a wide trip around us, never getting too close and pretending she never noticed us. It was like she wanted us to see her ignoring us.
I went out to be sure the chicken doors had closed and she sat at a distance and watched me but never came near me.
Yesterday morning we were out working in the garden and she followed us into the garden and sat on a pile of cardboard, but never would come close. When I went to pick the greens for dinner, she parked herself about two rows from where I was picking, sat and meowed like she wanted me to pet her, but any time I took a step towards her, she ran.
Is that cat totally crazy . . or am I? Don’t answer that! 🙂
My friend who took care of things while we were gone said only the last couple of days did she see Cat. The last day, Cat was actually sitting up on her cat tree that Vince made for her. Cat was probably thinking we were never coming back and she might as well try to make friends with this other human. The friend loves Boots and spends lots of time with him. In fact, I think Boots is sometimes disappointed to see that I’m back.
I hope Cat enjoys having my car back for a week because next week, it will be gone again. At least Vince will be here and the shop will be open so . . things could be worse for her.

My parents’ cat always snubbed them for a couple of days after they came back from a trip (and they rarely went anywhere). Of course she was way too social to keep up the snub for very long. She was like the little kid who never stops talking…meow, meow, meow, meow. The lady who came to feed her while my parents were gone would always say the kitty would come and “talk and talk” to her, so it truly was a matter of her being ticked off that my parents had been gone and didn’t take her along. LOL

Cats can be so aloof and demanding at the same time! She is definitely trying to punish you for leaving her alone!
