Dogs can be so weird. I guess we all can.
Yesterday we got up, Vince took Rita out and when they came in, she didn’t want her treat. That was terribly unusual. Then when we fed her, she didn’t even come into the kitchen. She can be anywhere in the house and when she hears us messing with her food bowl, she comes running. All day, she slept in her bed . . not paying attention to anything going on around her.
About 5 p.m., I put a little of her food in a small bowl and brought it to her. She sniffed it and turned her head. I opened a can of dog food she likes that we keep for backup dog food. She sniffed that and turned her head. I tried a piece of cheese, a scrambled egg . . she wouldn’t even take a sip of water.
By 7 p.m., I was prepared to get up first thing this morning and take her to Abilene. A friend’s dog has had pancreatitis and almost died. My uncle’s dog has recently had pancreatitis and almost died. I was sure Rita had pancreatitis. The vet has told us that when the pressure gets too high in her eyes, it can feel like a migraine. I know what those feel like and she probably was acting much like I used to act when I had one . . let me stay still in a dark room and don’t anyone talk to me!
Vince was worried. I suggested we take her to Abilene tomorrow and he agreed.
About 8 p.m., she stood up, stretched, went to her food bowl and rattled it. I went in and put about 1 tsp. of food in the bowl. She ate. I waited about an hour and put another tsp. in and she ate that. She jumped up on the sofa, then got into Vince’s chair with him . . she was back to her old self.
No idea what was wrong with her but we we were concerned! She seems fine so far today. She slept good last night. I hope she’s ok but we’ll be watching her closely for a few days.

I’m so gad she is better. It is so hard to know what could go wrong with animals try can’t tell us. I always think of them like we did with out babies “if only you could talk “

So glad she is better, my heart sank when I saw your post. Our little Emmi seems to be totally recovered but I’m still watching every hiccup she makes!

I, too, was worried when I saw the title of your post today. We have a Labrador with a pretty finicky stomach. I’ve learned to trust that dogs are so much smarter than we are… if they don’t feel good they stay in bed. If their stomach is upset, they don’t eat. So long as she appears to be in no pain, I give it a couple of days. After two, though, it’s off to the vet. Glad to hear Rita is back to herself.

That’s generally how I look at it too but with Rita’s eyes, there’s no way to know if the pressure has skyrocketed and she’s hurting. It isn’t like she would be limping or screaming if we touched a hurting spot. Also, we have no vets in our town who can check her pressure and no ER vets. We have something we really need to do Friday so I’d hate to cancel on that to go to the vet so I was thinking we’d go today. But I’m glad she’s better.
You’re right . . we need to learn to leave them alone and let them do what feels right, til we see it’s a bigger problem. I’m just a bit panicky with her eye pressure.

Maybe she did have a headache. Or maybe just a tummyache. Glad to hear she is feeling better!

I do hope it hasn’t repeated, but maybe it was a headache. That would certainly fit the circumstances.
