I was determined not to have a garden this year but Vince has promised to help more so I’m going to try it again. He knows I can’t do a whole lot with my knee and he really wants to have fresh veggies so we’ll see how it goes.
We have plenty of seeds but I love trying new things. I placed a small order with Rare Seeds/Baker Creek this morning.
The reason I went to the seed website was because I was looking for pencil corn. That’s my favorite dent corn. I love it for cornbread and for grits. Baker Creek didn’t have it but I found it somewhere else.
The seeds I ordered from Baker Creek were on their “Favs for 2019” list and are all new to me.
The Chinese Python Snake Beans look interesting and I figured . . what’s one more snake in the garden? The article said it’s fun to grow in kids’ gardens and . . aren’t we all a child at heart? I’m probably most excited about this one.
The Okinawan Pure White Bitter Melon is said to be “quite nutritionally potent” so I figured I’d try that. I read more about it here. It says to always slice the melon thinly to reduce the bitterness. The article said it grows in tropical regions and since we are not very tropical, my guess is it will be difficult for me to grow but I’ll try anything once. It’s supposed to be iron, beta carotene, calcium and contains substantial levels of vitamins C and B so it would be nice to get to try it.
Next is Montana Cudu Corn. It’s so pretty that I had to try it. I can generally grown corn so this should be a success. Because corn will cross with other corns so easily, I’ll only grow one at a time – either Montana Cudu or Pencil. I cannot grow both if I want to save the seeds from year to year.
Succatosh Beans. We love all kinds of beans and have decent luck with them so we’ll grow these and let most of them dry if they make.
The last one is Nadapeno Peppers. They have the flavor of jalapeno peppers but no heat. There are times I really want the jalapeno flavor but not so much heat. Even the mild jalapenos can sometimes be crazy hot and the hot ones can sometimes be mild. One year we grew poblano peppers there were so hot, even our friends who swear there’s no pepper too hot for them . . they couldn’t eat these. Sometimes in the evening when we’re grilling, I like to throw on a few cheese or cream cheese stuffed jalapenos but if it’s late in the evening, sometimes I’m wishing I hadn’t eaten them.
Now I’m anxious to get started with my garden. Vince will probably start tilling and adding organic materials to the soil within a week or so. We have to plant as early as we can . . always trying to second guess when that last hard freeze will happen, but if we don’t plant early, once the temps get so hot, everything (including the gardener) will shrivel in the heat.

I am going to have my garden back this year! I’m following you down this rabbit hole and ordering the Heirloom seed collection unless you recommend a starter pack from another site. I get seedlings from local high school’s ffa program. Phenomenal Prices! I’ve only done lettuce, herbs, and carrots from seed so this will be interesting. I’ll have to cover them in the bed with plastic containers as I don’t have a green house (yet!)

I ended up buying an Aero Garden to start some herbs. I’ve expanded by planting a container with micro mini salad greens (15 days to harvest, supposedly) and they are coming up. I just have to wait for a few more days to plant the second container.
And, I’ve ordered some more seeds for this year’s garden – I want to rebuild my area to have a raised bed since my knees are also getting old.

‘They’ came Tuesday evening and started digging a hole in the lot right beside us. Our garden will be half of what it has been. No one in the neighborhood thought this lot would ever be built on as it’s odd shaped and small. Neighbors will miss the sharing of abundance! Husband has always tried something new each year too. Some are keepers, others like salsify are best forgotten! Last year, he had a bumper crop of spaghetti squash which we had never eaten before .

A friend told me to eat a small apple when I had gerd, heart burn, etc. I guess it is the pectin in the apple that helps a lot especially after I have had jalapenos for supper.
