Ponderings from the Recliner – by Vince
You know how I told you a day or so ago that I would share some marital advice. Well, it didn’t take me long!
Today is “knitting day” for Judy. Knitting day means she knits for the whole day. Every Tuesday morning Judy heads to a local coffee shop and knits with a group of her friends. Then some of them go out to lunch and I usually see her again sometime before scheduled (never happens) dinner. When she gets home I say “what’s for dinner” and she says “I’m not hungry, I’m sure you can find you something in the refrigerator”.
Well today, while she was off having fun, I was cutting trees. I will be cutting trees for the next few days. The trees are used to spawn mushrooms. If you are interested, you can find youtube videos on the process. Anyway, after hours of cutting wood this morning and into the afternoon, I came in and warmed up something we had a few night ago. Then I started researching what else I needed for the mushroom spawn. Wax! You know the kind you use for canning. I have to seal hundreds of holes and the ends of each log. How much wax do you think I need? Lots!
Anyway, I went to Amazon and found wax was running about $10 a pound! Are you kidding me? When did wax go sky high? Ok, I thought, Walmart will have it at a good price. NOT! $7.10 a pound. What the heck? I can’t believe it. When all else fails I search on Google for “Gulf Wax cheap”. Low and behold one of my fall back stores, Fleet and Farm has it for $2.95/pound, less than half what Walmart is charging. I think to myself, I am going to need a lot of wax for a long time (new hobby, you know) so I better stock up. I then look for a free shipping coupon. Nope, none to be found. OK, no coupon so I have to maximize shipping costs. I start increasing the quantity in my cart and see where the shipping increases. I pick a “reasonable” amount right before another jump in shipping. Bingo, I got the best deal. I am happy. Oh wait, Judy asks me how much I ordered and here we go….. Why do you need so much wax she asks. Because it take a lot, I said and I have a lot more trees to cut, this week and into the future. If everyone else is charging so much, I better stock up now. Do you realize that the amount I order is less than the weight of yarn that arrives each week? And all this with no supper!
So the marital advice is this: The best time to discuss wax is after a nice dinner, not before and especially if there is no dinner.
So besides the marital advice, you all learned about a great wax deal. I would hurry and order before I decide I need more!
Well I am off now to heat up some beanie weenies, Enjoy!

As someone who has been married for 47 years, I think you’ve also hit on another necessity, Vince….a sense of humor! Good for you and hope you have a great crop of mushrooms!

enjoy your supper. I hope you like your Mushroom project too. At least you can eat them where Judy can’t.
Bon says
So why do you put holes in the trees and fill them with wax?
kim pavventy says
What kind of mushrooms are you growing? I’m lucky I live on Oregon where I can hunt all kinds in my yard!
Right now I’m seeing puff balls next month I will be finding lobsters.

You can read about the mushrooms he has here: https://patchworktimes.com/2018/09/11/mushrooms-3/

I don’t like mushroom taste – they all taste like dirt to me – but it’s interesting to learn about how they are grown. Have fun finding all the holes in the trees!

I’m sorry but ‘I am going to need a lot of wax for a long time (new hobby, you know) so I better stock up’ cracked me up. Vince 1 Judy 0.
I don’t know if I told you that my boyfriend complained about my fabric stash when I moved. Told me after I get my craft room setup, I got 6 months to use some of it. I DO NOT have a large stash at all. I wanted to retort with do you see a ring on this finger? but considering he is redoing this house with me and working his butt off, I didn’t. Frankly he is committed even if he hasn’t made anything official yet. lol

Plus he was in the process of helping me move my stuff out of a third floor apartment. That is not the time to start a discussion on anything either. lol

You are so funny! This post really made me laugh! Keep up the good work! I mean writing AND getting ready for your mushrooms.

You are so spoiled!! I would enjoy reading about your experience with the mushrooms. Judy did tell you that my brother doesn’t mind if you want to come cut down some mesquites, you can cut some down on our farm near Owens. As long as you cut them even with the ground. Good luck!!

Having a lot of fun reading your posts, Vince! But, sorry, I’m not getting it as to why you have to wait for Judy to come home and make dinner. Why can’t you make dinner to be ready when she comes home?
