We just keep having more and more fun around here! Several years ago we went to a Mother Earth News Fair and sat in on all kinds of lectures. Vince was particularly interested in growing mushrooms. He came home all fired up about growing mushrooms but it kinda fizzled and he had too much on his plate so he never did it. The past few days he’s been researching and talking to the mushroom people. Yesterday he placed his mushroom order. I think I’m more excited than he is!
We’re a bit limited because we have to grow the ones that are suited to warmer climates. Just in case anyone missed my incessant complaining the last four months . . it gets HOT here!
These are the ones he ordered. You may want to click on the links and see them and read about them. They’re pretty interesting.
- Shiitake “Wild N.C. strain”
- Shiitake “warm”
- Oyster “warm blue”
- Lion’s Mane “Tufted”
- Oyster “cold blue”
- Oyster “golden”
- Oyster “phoenix”
- Reishi Gold
- Reishi Red
I think Vince told me that some of them will produce within a few weeks, some take much longer. Heck, we have a rain here and the next day there are mushrooms everywhere but . . we don’t eat those.

Judy , You and VInce need to go to the Mushroom festival here in Texas at Maddisonville. It is so fun. They have every kind of mushroom you can imagine( they grow there in that area). It always seemed strange they grow them but they very seldom appear in Texas stores. They cook them,or you can buy and try different flavors. It is free and it is or should be coming up, Check it out. Might be a good day visit for you and VInce can learn from them. We go and get trucks loads of used mushroom dirt to use in flower beds and garden too.

Oooh….I never knew there was a mushroom festival in Madisonville! Sometimes we stop by and buy mushrooms at the gate. I’m going to have to check that out! Thanks!

My garden mostly hasn’t done a lot the last few years. Maybe I should look into growing mushrooms instead. The list Vince is planning on looks really good. (I love mushrooms).

Google Mushroom Mountain in SC. They are wonderful with so many to try and do medical research on uses of mushrooms. Trade has written a book on mushrooms that zvince might enjoy. You might even want to visit. SC is hot but humid. Have you freeze dried any?

That’s where he ordered. All the links are to Mushroom Mountain. Vince did take a class from the Mushroom Mountain guy at the Mother Earth News Fair and Vince has his book. We will definitely have to have a mister or something to add humidity or . . as Vince says . . we could move to East Texas.

I had no idea they were growing mushrooms much less having a festival.l Sounds like fun. I bet that dirt from the mushrooms would be a great idea for the flowers.

I love Lion’s Mane. Sliced, sauted then cooked in tomato/speghetti sauce.
