I know . . I start lots of diets. I’m always enthusiastic the first few days. I’ve always said and it’s probably about 90% true – it isn’t what I eat, but it’s what I drink. Keto sounds like something I can do if I can get past the bread and Dr. Pepper issues. I won’t hardly eat storebought bread so if I don’t make bread, that problem is solved. Dr. Pepper . . I know I can do it. I’ve done it before.
Once I get past the caffeine headache, plain water made fizzy with the Soda Stream is good enough for me. It’s the fizz I like but the caffeine headache usually sends me back for a Dr. Pepper.
Yesterday the lady who cuts my hair was telling me about the Zevia drinks. She said “they aren’t bad”.
I bought some. I figured this might be a good time to switch. I can’t really taste much right now with this cold so why not try it. First, I buy Dr. Pepper when it’s on sale – 4 – 12 packs for $10. This Zevia was on sale – $3.99 for one six pack. I think that alone will keep me from drinking too much of it. It contains no sugar and no artificial sweetener. It does have caffeine. If I can use these to keep me from having a headache . . like maybe have one in the morning, and then drink fizzy tap water, I think I’ll be good to go.
I also apparently has no artificial color!
I was expecting it to at least look like a Dr. Pepper.
It was pleasantly refreshing. Like I said, I’m not tasting a lot right now but it didn’t taste anything like a Dr. Pepper, which is probably good. Something that tries to mimic a flavor and misses is sometimes really a let down. It had absolutely no aftertaste.
I bought a six pack of the Dr. Zevia and a six pack of a Ginger Root Beer that my hair cut lady said was good and refreshing.
This is a start – get off the sugary soft drinks and that’s the biggest hurdle I’ll have to face with my eating habits.

I did a keto plan for about 6 months. The first 3 weeks were rough I guess because my body was detoxing. I just had low energy and felt fuzzy brained. After that I had energy and felt really good. I lost almost 20 pounds. The hardest thing for me to give up were beans and peas. I’m a Southerner and I like my purple hull type peas but after a while it didn’t bother me. If I got a bad craving for them I would eat one spoonful . I still cooked regular for my husband because he has no health problems. It really lowered my triglycerides from over 600 to about 180. Then my Mom got sick and I just ate when and what I could grab. I’m getting ready to go back on Keto.

I figure if there’s something I’m really craving, I’ll just eat it . . once I hope . . and move on. The fact that it dropped your triglycerides that much in six months seems pretty amazing to me. That alone gives me the desire to stick with this plan.

It’s just a thousand times harder to lose weight after 50. At 20, it was so easy! Of course, a lot of things were easier at 20, but I wouldn’t want to go back to being 20 for anything! I only drink water. About once a month I’ll treat myself to a Lipton Citrus Ice Tea. But my problem is carbs. Potatoes and Flour tortillas top the list. I’ve cut WAY back on those and it’s helping…slowly. Eating a lot of sweet potatoes these days. We rarely go out to eat so that’s not a problem here.
Cooking like you and I do makes it hard too. If someone would just cook for me and set it in front of me, I think I could stick to a good healthy eating plan. I’m thinking Curtis Stone….I like his accent. 🙂

Yes! If there was no food in the house and someone brought low carb meals, I’d be fine. There’s nothing I want badly enough to leave the house and go get it.
I agree that after 50 everything is harder. I also wouldn’t go back to being 20. I’ve let myself gain way too much and now, it isn’t just that I need to drop 10 pounds . . I need to lose a lot but . . one pound at a time. 🙂

What did me in was Louis having surgery and needed to eat differently. I’m a fool for carbs so things snuck back in like potato chips and pasta. I’m starting over on Saturday. Because I need to finish off these chips.
Judy Laquidara says
That’s funny – finish off the chips and start over. Good luck. I’m not much of a pasta but there are other things I will miss.

Judy, I am sure that you have seen what CJ did. I am so proud of her. Cutting out all white stuff works for me. Time to do it again. I love fresh fruit too and will have to learn to eat less of that. I have a diabetic diet to follow and a heart diet as well. Trying to find a nutritionist here that can lead me in the right direction. My insurance does have support but it is hard woking with people who are heavier than me telling me what to do. I lost 20 bs while in the hospital for a month after my heart attack. I lived on cherries with milk, coffee, milk, tea and an occasional diet soda. I only use Stevia as the only sweetener I use (I even bake with it). The food was terrible in the hospitals. Way to salty, or canned and too salty. I only eat fresh veggies and fruit. Nothing out of a can due to sugars and too much salt. We are both on Bp meds. I need to lost 35 to 40 lbs to be where I want to be. It came right back on after starting to eat regular meals again when I got out of the hospital. I certainly need to get back to walking every day. I did so faithfully about 3 times a day during the winter and spring. It is just too hot here even by 6 am and no shade here in the desert. I cannot wait for October to get here and temps in the 90’s again. We had to turn the AC on here a few times in March and by April, it was on full time.

I started Keto on Monday. I’m going to do this, but, we eat potatoes, pasta and bread because, first, they’re good and second, they’re easy. I have to plan better, but, I have a friend who has lost 40 lbs and I want to also! We can do this!

I also started the KETO diet on June 27th. I am recovering from spinal fusion surgery so probably not a great time to start a diet, but in my head I am ready. I have done the Atkins’ diet twice and this diet is very different. The high fat part is a big adjustment from other diets. Of course, you’re only supposed to eat good fats (coconut, avocados, sour cream, mayo, etc.). Unlike Atkins, it is much less protein and more fat. Carbs are still a problem, but there are substitutes for flour and sugar out there–they just cost a lot. Most everyone who blogs about KETO will have links to the products they recommend. I have spent a lot of money and only lost 6 lbs so far. I do believe, however, that my bloodwork will be better when I next have it tested. I plan to hang in there just for me. My husband is Type I and Type II diabetic and should do this with me, but he has lost all his weight and is taking cutting edge meds since his body has both types and fights itself. He also got bit by a poisonous snake about a year ago and lost a lb a day for two weeks (not a diet I recommend). Look on Pinterest…there are many recipes that are wonderful and many are for the Instant Pot (which I love!). Good luck to all!

Best of luck, Judy. If it works for the stars, maybe it works for regular people, too!

Try Wal-Mart’s water called Clear. It’s fizzy, and fruit flavored. I really like peach and black cherry. Eliminated Coke 20 years ago. I was an addict! I buy the cans, cheaper!
Judy Laquidara says
I’m not going to pay for water when I can make it fizzy here at home for almost nothing. I’ve always said that if I’m going figure out a way to stop drinking Dr. Pepper, I’m not going to drink anything but water.

I’ve enjoyed reading Dennis Pollock’s “60 Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar.” I’m trying to lower my weight a bit, and I like his short chapters. He is diabetic, and his book has several food carb charts (say that three times fast!). It’s an easy read, and quite positive, I’ve given away two copies so far. One friend said she’s lost 20 lbs. using this book, and appreciated the gift. She said she found the internet information was so confusing that she hadn’t been able to understand what she should do for herself, newly diagnosed with diabetes.
Good luck to all who are making an effort to lose weight!

Thanks. I’ll check it out. There is so much info out there that it can be overwhelming.
