Anytime I mention feeding eggs to the chickens, people think that’s weird. The eggs are a great source of protein so it doesn’t hurt at all to feed eggs back to the chickens. While it doesn’t hurt the chickens to eat the eggs raw, it’s not a good idea because it might encourage them to start eating the eggs they lay. Occasionally, I will drop an egg when I’m out there and they do gobble it down.
I had three dozen eggs that had been in the fridge for a month . . hidden in the sewing room fridge, where I normally don’t put eggs. They were still perfectly fine for us to eat but I have plenty of fresher eggs so I scrambled those for the chickens.
I’ll admit it . . I put the egg shells in the same bowl I’d used for making our salad so there’s leftover bits of lettuce and sunflower seeds in the bowl. Why wash the bowl just to put egg shells in it?
I usually usually bake or boil the shells and given them to the chickens but, with tomato plants in the garden, I’m going to put the egg shells around the tomato plants. I boiled them, crushed them with the immersion blender and I’ll pour the water and crushed shells around the plants.
They were so happy to get yummy scrambled eggs.

I feed the extra eggs to my hounds….all longhair Dachshunds. I’ll try feeding some to the chickens. Thanks.

Cilla, do you cook the eggs or give raw to your dogs?
Cilla Tyler says
For my hounds (Dachshunds) I scramble them lightly.

What a great idea!

My dog loves scrambled eggs! When I make them for dinner, I always make extra for her.

So interesting about the egg shells! Why do you have to boil them and use the immersion blender on them before putting them around the tomatoes?
Judy Laquidara says
Once you boil them or roast them, the membrane that holds the shell together is gone and they will crumble easily plus, if there’s any bacteria, itii gets cooked and doesn’t cause any issues for my plants.
