Remember back almost exactly one month ago when I shared the picture of the big garden spider on the chicken coop?
That’s the picture from a month ago. Here he is today. Exact same spot.
The pictures were taken at different angles but it’s the same spider. I don’t think it ever moves. I have to open an egg door right below him so I always say nice things to him and then I say “STAY” and so far . . he’s listened. When I’m leaning over getting eggs, if something falls on the back of my head or neck, I’m 100% sure I’ll have a heart attack or a stroke or both!
Now there’s a second spider on the other side of the coop.
I guess we’re going to have a whole neighborhood of garden spiders (orb weavers) on the coop. I kinda like them . . so long as they like me and leave me alone.
Mary Kunna says
I’m afraid those spiders would meet their maker with me. The only good spider is a dead spider.
Judy Laquidara says
I pretty much feel the same but I’m trying to accept that there are good spiders and bad spiders . . just like good snakes and bad snakes. The orb weavers definitely eat bad bugs and I get real close to one of these when checking eggs and so far, he hasn’t bothered me so if he won’t bother me, I won’t bother him.
Dottie says
They are so pretty and interesting and frightful, all at the same time. Love their webs!
Clara says
I love the spiders in my garden because they catch and eat the bugs that I don’t like!
Judy Laquidara says
Yes, that’s a lesson I’m learning . . let the good spiders live!
Joyce says
If only they could chase away the snakes… 🙂
Cathi in Texas says
My daughter says if you touch their back legs they will bounce as if they are dancing.
Judy Laquidara says
Your daughter can do it and video it and send it to me. I am NOT touching any part of them. I don’t like them that much! 🙂
Cilla Tyler says
Blow lightly on her and she will bounce the web back and forth. If you look very closely she may still have her mate on the bottom of the web. When she’s done with him she will have him for dinner. I have a few in my yard and leave them be. EXCEPT when one wove a web across the swimming pool ladder. Uh Uh, ain’t havin’ none of that.
Sara S says
Remember the book Charlotte’s Web? You have a Charlotte!
Paula (Texas) says
We had two beautiful garden spiders last year. They left an egg case and I was so excited that I would have more of these beauties this year, but I guess the two days of freezing weather that was our winter killed the babies. Not one garden spider this year.
Carolyn says
Someone just posted a picture of one of these on our little town’s FB page. I’d never seen one before you posted it on your blog and now we have them in my town! How weird is that!!!
