Ever since I can remember, I’ve had an under the counter type radio in my kitchen. I’m not much on TV but I love my music playing. Before I went to MO in March, my radio in the kitchen would come back on after I turned it off. I’d sometimes have to turn it off 3 or 4 times before it would stay off. While I was away back in March, the radio began coming on by itself – mostly during the night so Vince unplugged it.
When I got home, we looked for another one but most are blue tooth and I want one that I stick my iPod into and it charges it while playing. We’re so short on electric plugs around here. We didn’t spend a lot of time looking and gave up but I’ve been missing my radio in the kitchen so last week I plugged it back in, hoping a four month break would have revived it.
Just now . . I’m sitting in the living room with the music going in here and the kitchen radio came on.
I got up to unplug it and just as I reached for the plug, one of the local morning talk show guys, said “Here’s something spooky about the radio!” I should have listened to what he was going to say before unplugging it. I may have to go online and listen to the rest of that sentence. But first . . I have to take the time to find myself a new radio.
Speaking of music in the kitchen, I always laugh when we’re watching those house hunter shows and people want a big, open kitchen where you can see into the rest of the house. If I had my way, the kitchen would be in a separate building, where I could keep my music playing and not interrupt Vince’s TV watching. When we’re looking at houses, an open kitchen is definitely a negative for me but here, we were so desperate for a house, I ended up with two things I do not like in a kitchen – open to the family room and painted cabinets. But, we got so many other things we wanted that I live with those things. What I cannot (or maybe just don’t want to) live without is my kitchen radio!

I have a Tivoli radio. I can attach my iPhone to it to play music. I can’t remember if it charges it at the same time but I think so. The sound is awesome.

If I’m buying a house, none of the current trends would sell me: open concept, barn doors, subway tile, concrete floors, glossy cabinets, granite and stainless steel…
I think the thing that bothers me the most is couples ripping out perfectly good cabinets and fixtures to be on trend.

I agree. At least take them down in one piece, or as few as possible and donate to Habitat for Humanity or some other worthy cause that will recycle them to someone who needs them. But to see them sledgehammered and destroyed makes me sick to my stomach.

For the most part I agree with Theresa and Judy…I did not want an open concept house when we built but I do like my subway back splash and granite counter tops. It also bothers me when people are ripping out perfectly good cabinets and fixtures, as if the current trend for kitchens helps them cook better. You hear couples on TV talk about good space for entertaining–how often do they entertain? and these fancy kitchens…do these couples actually cook in them, or are they just to impress people? If they must rip out the cabinets and fixtures to suit their tastes, could they please do it carefully so someone on a limited budget, or Habitat for Humanity can use what is functional but not their style. The demolition with sledge hammers I find repulsive.

I like small gallery style kitchen’s. Not a ton of walking. Not open to the rest of the house. My husband likes open spaces. Our kitchen is open. I always feel like even if you have 1 area of the common living areas clean, it doesn’t look it unless everything is clean and organized. Oh well, for the most part I like our place! I don’t think anyone has a place they consider 100% perfect. Well, at least my neighbors finally moved out who called the police when my son practiced his saxophone (for all of 10 minutes a day)!

We must have the same brand of under the cabinet radio, mine does the same, and here I was thinking it was haunted lol. Evelyn, I have too have a gallery kitchen, it’s not so bad now that it’s just hubby and I but when all 6 of the kids were here it was terrible lol.

I am not a fan of the open concept home either! Our tract home has a small kitchen that is open to the family room, and at the back of the house. It was a tiny U shaped kitchen but when we remodeled we made it a galley kitchen without changing too much of the footprint; it is still open to the family room, though, which is now my sewing room. When I look at house plans for fun on Pinterest, there are three things that instantly kill a plan for me: If you can see the kitchen sink from the front door (my kitchen is never spic and span for long); if the laundry area is a pass-through hallway from the garage (where people walk over your laundry sorting)and if there is a powder room immediately upon entering the front door (ewww).
