Remember the seeds that were in the potting soil and when I started my vegetable plants, I kept getting weird things growing and I found what looked like sunflower weeds in the potting soil? I planted them just to see what I got. This is what they have grown into. I still think it’s some kind of sunflower. What do you think?
After it blooms, I get this big old head thing . . that I’m guessing is going to make seeds.
They aren’t very tall . . maybe up to my knees, but there are so many varieties of sunflowers.
And, speaking of weird flowers . . remember I told you that I’ve read that when planting artichokes from seeds, many of the seeds don’t “produce true”. I still don’t know what they produce . . if it’s one thing or some variety of things but when I planted artichoke seeds, about half of them are not artichokes. The seeds all looked exactly the same but these plants are giants! They are up to my shoulders and I do believe they’re also going to be some type sunflower.
The leaves are tall. The stalks are the size of a small tree trunk. I’m anxious to see what they produce. If they’re pretty, I may save the seeds and plant them out in the woods next year for the turkeys.

That could very possibly be a Jerusalem artichoke or “sunchoke” The roots are good for human consumption.

Could be. I grow Jerusalem artichokes in the garden and these unknown things are way bigger than my regular Jerusalem artichokes but .. who knows.

If you get gobs of them you could send me a few. Love flowers of all kinds.

I’ll do it! Maybe I’ll even deliver them in person! 🙂

Looks like a wild sunflower to me. They grow in the road ditches up here. They host many of the insects and diseases that are then spread to the sunflowers raised for oil or eating.

I’m guessing that they are the sunflowers from your birdseed. we get them all over, too. sometimes I find them in a little clump- about 10 in a 1″ circle, and then I know that it’s the chipmunk that planted them! that always makes me laugh…
