I had seen these cute little bird seed hearts on several blogs and thought they would be cute to include in Addie’s Valentine’s package.
Let me tell you . . they are cute and it isn’t rocket science to make them . . but it almost is! 🙂
Every recipe I read online was different and most of them had comments about the combination not holding together properly. I chose the recipe that had seemed to have the least complaints about everything falling apart and right off the bat, I knew they were not going to hold together so I began adding more of this and more of that and ended up with a recipe that seems to be holding together. I hung one on our little pear tree and it hung there for several days, even through a drizzly rain, before the birds found it. Once they find it, they will pretty much devour them as soon as I hang another one out there. Depending on where they begin eating, they sometimes do peck at the top and then the string becomes free and the remainder of the heart falls to the ground but the birds still eat it so . . it’s a fun project.
CAUTION: I did use peanut butter to get mine to hold together so you may want to use another recipe if you have peanut allergies to deal with.
In addition to what’s shown in the photo, you will need flour and water but I figure most of us have those things on hand.

I can hardly wait to see Addie watching for the birds to come and gobble up the little hearts!

Ooh! My kids would love to make these.

I wonder if you could put them in a low oven for a few hours to dry them. It doesn’t take the birds long to find a food source. They are a daily entertainment.

What a cute addition to her package! Clever! We used to cover pine cones with peanut butter and roll them in birdseed when the kids were growing up.

Judy,
I have made these using the fat from deer. It is hard, can stand up to weather without falling apart and makes use of something that would just get thrown away otherwise.
Just seed and deer fat.
Always enjoy your blog!

I think your deer must have more fat than our deer. I’m trying to remember if we ever have any deer fat and I don’t think we do. Ours a pretty scrawny . . maybe that’s why.

Those heart shaped bird Valentines are very cute. I bought some like that one year and they lasted well. The ribbon that was holding them stayed on throughout the whole feeding frenzy. Don’t remember how they were tied. I love watching the birds in our yard too. I still make suet cakes with grease from frying hamburger and add seeds to it for the winter feeding.

I wonder if the ribbon/twine could be placed down the middle of the heart when the packing of the cookie cutter is going on? Especially if you coiled it in a circle. Of course, as Judy said, they’ll go to the ground for it!

Looks “good enough” to eat 🙂
