There’s good news for Denise and Amy . . this time someone else is getting blamed . . and it’s my friend, Judy! She keeps talking about her hexie quilts and they’re beautiful and I keep going back to look at her current project, and I may have asked her a million questions. Look at her current quilt on her blog. Gorgeous! About the only thing I haven’t asked her, and the question is just on the tip of my tongue is . . “Can I have it when you’re done?” 🙂 I think I know the answer so I might as well make my own but . . I have a tendency to start things like this and not finish but I guess it doesn’t really matter if I finish it or not – so long as it keeps me occupied and out of trouble, right?
Ugly! I know! You can say it. I started this one in maybe 1983. I got so tired of looking at it that on several occasions, I made up my mind to throw it away and then I go dig it out of the trash. Who knows . . it may really be gone at this point. I don’t even know, and actually if I never run across it again, I’ll be happy.
Nicole got started making hexies when she was here and I think her top may be finished.
Then I began searching on Pinterest and came across several hexie quilts that have me wanting to start NOW! This one was apparently made in the 1930’s. I wish I could have met the maker of this quilt. I’m not copying the picture since I don’t have permission but please click on the link and check out that quilt. I’m able to get a better picture of it by clicking on this link but the first link gives more info.
That led me to this one on Pinterest. I love it! Last night was spent doodling in EQ. This is as far as I’ve gotten and I’m not sure where I’m going. Probably down a dead end road! 🙂
The colors aren’t what I’ll be using . . if I do it at all.
Judy told me that if I get started with hexies, I can forget about knitting and since I have so much yarn around here, maybe I should forget about hexies and keep knitting! 🙂

I have quite a few of those done but in the diamond shape-started in 1990 probably-great airport layover project or when waiting for Galen to meet me some where. Still have not done the path tho! It is a good car project while waiting for someone.

I ALSO HAVE DONE THE DIAMONDS IN THE SEVEN SISTERS SETTING. IT IS FULL TO QUEEN AND ONLY NEEDS BOARDER. JUST KEEP THINKING EVERYTHING IS HAND SEWN AND HATE THINKING OF HAND DOING BOARDER, SO HERE IT SITS FOR MAYBE 18 YEARS NOW.
DO LIKE THE HEXIES THEY ARE DOING NOW.

Hahaha! You are funny, funny! The answer to your question is the same answer I give everyone else. NO! 🙂
If you run across your old hexi project, send it to me! I love it.
I thought for sure you would have ordered your papers by now. 😉 Jump on in, it’s fun.

It is fun, but don’t make it too complicated for the first project. Make a small, traditional looking table topper or even a snack mat. See how you like it. Mostly, I use the 3/4″ sides, but last year I started 1-1/4″ ones with fussy cut animals and they are darling, and much faster. I also hand embroidered some designs on 2″ ones, and those are really fast to get somewhere! Make something easy, finish it, and if you had fun, then make something complicated. The design from EQ would be fabulous, but yes, it would take a lot of time, and it’s the time you usually sit knitting at night. Choices are a pain, aren’t they?

I love what you came up with on EQ. I keep looking at the hexi quilts, thinking I really want to learn how to do this, and Right NOW!
I think you should set aside the knitting and get started, then I can watch it grow on your blog, and sort of live vicariously through you.

Hi Judy, you should check this one out, she sells the pattern. http://gritslife1.blogspot.de/p/hexagonquilt.html
But please do not blame me 😉
I made a Hexagon Bag and I finished it!

You can print the papers any size you need from EQ7, although I’d have to figure out how to get there again. Print them on card stock and cut them out. Some people would rather have die cut accuracy, but if your sides are 1 inch, cutting them out by hand, while time consuming, is accurate enough. I also find that hexies are more potable than knitting.
JudyL says
NO! 🙂 If I can buy them already cut, I’m not doing it. When Nicole first started making hexies, we cut them from a thick paper (not as thick as card stock) on the Go Cutter and then I said . . NO! I’m buying these babies already cut.

Have you seen the Lucy Boston quilt? It is amazing and hand pieced. I am so tempted but I too knit plus have an entire (queen size) Buggy Barn applique quilt that I haven’t started yet!

I actually like your old UFO from the 80’s.

I have 330 hexies cut out for an I Spy quilt for my youngest grandson. This spring I will cut out the triangles to go with it. We are driving out to CA this summer, so that will give me lots of time to do hand sewing.
