Do you like Boston Brown Bread? I love it . . so long as it doesn’t have raisins.
For years and years (before Chad), we went down to New Orleans at least once a month. I loved eating at the Chart House, which was upstairs near Jackson Square, and that’s the first place we headed when we got to town. I loved their Boston Brown Bread. It’s been at least 28 years (before Chad) since I ate there and I still remember their Boston Brown Bread. Every time I see a recipe for it, I have to try it and so far, I’ve not come up with anything close . . or close to what I remember their bread tasting like.
The other day I came across this recipe, and had to try it. The ingredients are every day items I had in my pantry.
The changes I made to the recipe:
- Raisins were optional and I did not add them.
- I did add 1 teaspoon caraway seeds.
The little lip around the coffee can was a problem. I thought it might be but I simply opened the bottom end of the can and the bread slipped right out.
It’s the closest thing I’ve had to the Chart House brown bread and I’ll be making it again.

Yum!! I love brown bread, reading all the comments on the recipe site was interesting too. We just ate it cold with butter. Ill have to try this and with fried hotdogs! What a concept! Of course anything in butter is better… did you bake it or do it on the stove top? Thanks Judy

Seems like all I’m doing this week is making bread, but for my boys, its biscuits and rolls…much easier to stash away in pockets as they saunter out the door. 🙂 Still, Boston Brown Bread sounds amazing. I was born in Europe and no one does bread like they do! I always felt a kinship with Heidi when she stashed the German rolls called Semeln to take back to Peter’s grandmother.
Now to find my coffee cans. I must make this bread! Wish they still sold coffee in metal cans.

I love brown bread. We had it every week when I was growing up. Usually on Saturday with hot dogs/beans! I even like the raisins. I will have to try this recipe.
Thanks, Judy! This brought me back to some pretty good memories of growing up.

I grew up in Massachusetts with a mother from Rhode Island. Brown bread has been on my menu for every Thanksgiving and Christmas of my life. (Debbie, we also had hot dogs and baked beans every Saturday night, but not with brown bread) My recipe calls for stone ground corn meal (white) from Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Rhode Island. Have no idea how it would compare to the New Orleans version. When my children became adults and left home, I gave them the recipe, a box of the corn meal, and a coffee can. Had to search antique stores for the coffee cans, you can even find them with the metal lids! There is nothing like steamed brown bread. Glad you discovered it!!

Oh, forgot to mention: I don’t put raisins in either. And haven’t heard of frying it in butter. But I do like lots of butter on it!
