There are lots of things we don’t need but at the top of our “Do Not Need” list is . . more chickens! Apparently someone forgot to tell the bantams. Vince is so easy . . when I would go to get eggs, I would chase them off the nests and take the eggs but for the past week, I haven’t been able to do much and Vince said “Well . . if they want babies, they should be able to have babies!” Really? I hope that same analogy applies to the wife and her wants!
First there was one little black bantam sitting on eggs, then a second one decided to join her . . in the same nest. Teamwork seams to work better for chickens than most humans, it seems. When there was just one chicken on the nest, I looked under her and there must have been 25 eggs. Now that there are two chickens sitting, I don’t even want to know how many are under them and if even half of them hatch, we’re in trouble. Heck, if none of them hatch, we still have too many chickens.
I walked out there this morning and when I looked in the nest, Pearl had decided to join them.
Pearl is actually in there just donating an egg to the cause. She has no interest in becoming a mother. I think it’s funny that all the chickens hop up in the nest with the sitting hens and lay their eggs to contribute to our new crop of chickens, even though there are two empty nests right there.
We should have some very interesting babies. Pearl is the only full size chicken and I’m not even sure the bantam roosters are able to do the job to get fertilized eggs from Pearl. They try, and though I haven’t watched closely, I haven’t seen much evidence of them accomplishing their task.
There are Silkies, Cochins, Mille fleur d’Uccles, Buff Brahmas, and who knows what else is out there so . . we shall wait and see what the new babies look like. They should begin showing their little faces in a couple of weeks.

Oh NO!!! How many do you have now (pre-babies)?!! Vince might find himself building yet another coop! Then he won’t be so interested in letting them do what they want! HA

25 eggs! Wow, I never realized they would lay so many, even in tandem. Here’s hoping they don’t all need a sitting break at the same time! =)
