Design Wall Monday – September 10, 2012

I have a good one today on my design wall!

This pattern is “Remember Whooo Loves You“.

Back in early May, when I first found out Chad and Nicole were using an owl theme for the nursery, a friend suggested this pattern.  This is a friend I first “met” many years ago on Alex Anderson’s message board.  We all had screen names.  She was known as “Lady Baltimore” and even though I’ve met her in person and have corresponded with her for many years, I’ll always think of her as “LadyB” and I actually have a hard time calling her by her real name, which is Nancy!

LadyB does gorgeous applique . . I mean . . it’s perfect.

So, not only did LadyB suggest this pattern for my grandbaby’s quilt but she told me that if I would make the nine patch top and send it to her, she would do the applique.  I jumped at that but this is the quilt that I had mentioned that I was waiting to make to be sure the baby was a girl and then Nicole said she wanted it to be non-gender specific so that’s when I made it using the colors Nicole wanted, sent it off to LadyB who did the amazing applique and sent it back to me.

I think I’m going to put a narrow medium/dark border, then a small nine patch border, then another medium/dark border.  I was kinda wanting to do a cool border but really . . a little nine patch is probably perfect and I don’t want anything to distract from the applique.  She used ultra suede for the eyes and beak and I can’t wait for Adalina to be old enough to see it and touch it and realize the eyes and beak feel different from the rest of the quilt.  It’s just so cute!  I think I’m going to hand quilt it.  I’ll have to think about that.

  3. He (she?) really is a cute little thing … I love that the beak and eyes are made of different textures! I have hand quilted all of my grandbabies “special” quilts so far. All have experienced regular washings (LOL!) and have survived so far! 🙂

  4. That’s one of my favorite baby quilt patterns! It is just absolutely adorable and Adalina will love it ;*) We just learned our 6th grandbaby is now on its way, and I have been thinking of using this pattern for it too.

  5. ohhh love the owl and I can’t believe the extra light blocks add to the quilt – just proving that every quilt always looks a little better with the very light values and the very dark values in it!

    LadyB’s story reminded me of these lyrics:
    “Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil,
    But everyone knew her as Nancy.”

  10. I am so glad to see this up on your wall! I could hardly wait after she mentioned mailing it back to you! Her work is always beautiful and Adelina will love the textures in it. What a treasure she will have. I hope you do decide to handquilt it but your machine work will also be treasured for you marvelous talent.

  13. How adorable! That owl looks so wise… Makes me think of this poem:
    A wise old owl lived in an oak
    The more he saw the less he spoke
    The less he spoke the more he heard.
    Why can’t we all be like that wise old bird?

    A lesson I need frequently!
    Anxious to see the finish with borders and quilting…a real treasure for a real treasure!

  14. Oh, soooo cute! Maybe someday I’ll have a grandbaby, but I’m not holding my breath. Your granddaughter will adore it, whether it’s by hand or machine. Just a thought, but this might get dragged around and loved to death…machine?

  15. Just super cute! I love that pattern. Alas, my pattern is still only a pattern. No grandbabies here. I love the addition of the ultra suede – Adalina will love it. My MIL only handquilts and she gave the kids lots of quilts through the years – they were all loved and held up well.

  16. Absolutely darling quilt. I like that it is “gender neutral”, and I’m thinking that if it survives childhood it will also look great in Adelina’s first apartment or house.
    (Having lived in the Southwest for so long, where the stories of most tribes portray owls as a negative omen, I’ve been somewhat dismayed to see them popping up all over the country in decorating. I guess it’s easy to adapt to the area in which we live and forget things mean something quite different in other cultures. What’s a day without a surprise?)

  17. love seeing this quilt. love the owl and tree branch…..love knowing that i can adapt that concept to any design i want to. i so often forget about appliqué over simple quilt designs, yet, they are always the ones that i fall in love with…just forget to make them myself! LOL

  19. What an adorable quilt. Before reading the thread I wondered if Nancy had done the appy. She is such a beautiful person and her applique is out of this world!

  20. 9 patches are so friendly and sure put that owl front and center as the focus. What a generous friend! I’m sure the baby will love it, as will the mama and papa 🙂

  21. Judy, how well I remember the comments about Lady B’s applique. I never met her; wish I could! Wish to have met many of that group. Ah, life’s changes. The quilt is wonderful, the story of it even more so. How blessed are all, the givers and the receivers!

  24. Ultrasuede! So inspired that I am going to lift this idea. I have a tiny teeny partridge eye on an upcoming applique block and this is a perfect solution! Thank you, JudyL and LadyB.
