When the temps are as high as they are, I try to give cold treats to the chickens.
Everything they might eat goes into the freezer. Here are some squash ends that were cut off the squash we had for dinner last night, and the “tails” off the green beans I canned yesterday. I stick this type leftovers in the freezer and then toss it out to the chickens about mid-afternoon when I figure they’re just about to melt.
I don’t know if they ever notice that their treats are cold. I wonder if they get a brain freeze?
Whether they notice I’ve gone to the trouble to freeze their treats or not, they sure love most anything I bring them.

My guineas love strawberry tops and watermelon. They can wipe out a whole melon, rind and all in minute.

That is so sweet, reminds me of my childhood and our chickens, in the winter Mum used to make then hot bran and pollard for their breakfast.
Mum said that just as she made sure her children had a good warm start to the day, so her ‘chooks’ needed the same, and they rewarded her with beautiful eggs. Your eggs are soon to come Judy and they will be delicious.
Your ‘home farm’ is no longer a dream, it is a a beautiful reality, well earned and well deserved.
Cheerio.

My husband and I once belonged to a bird club. One of the members said her parrot wanted “good water” (water with an ice cube in it) compared to “water.” It is really interesting what parrots say (some understand and talk more than you think). Our bird enjoys drinking cool water from a running faucet. One of her favorite treats is a taste of ice cream!

Lucky chickens. Don’t forget your potato peelings, cabbage, lettuce and carrots……….also throw in your apple cores and some peaches.
JudyL says
Potato peelings are something chickens should never eat. Apple seeds are not good for them, though it would take quite a few seeds to create any real issues but we do not give them apple cores.
Cathy Stoddard says
Judy, this is great info – what is in the potato peel that is bad for them?? What about sweet potatoes or yams???
Thank you.

I give my dogs ice cream as a treat. The place down the street from me has kiddie cones and they put a dollop of ice cream on each. I hold one in each hand for the pups and they are in a race to finish before the other comes to invade. Maisy always gets crain freeze because she bites the ice cream off. She is soo funny because she scrunches up her nose and sneezes repeatedly. At least it is funny until she sneezes ice cream all over my leg! lol

reminds me of when the kids had rabbits for 4-H. they had to put frozen water bottles in the hutch for the bunnies to lay against when it was hot. the rabbits tolerate cold better than heat. they had 2 sets of bottles….one for the hutch and one for the freezer. they alternated them. we never thought about frozen treats. that might have helped too.
