Today, I’m most thankful that I’m a half full kind of girl! Otherwise, I’d be pulling my hair out!
I have a full size iPad and I like it but I LOVE the mini. Ever since getting that thing in May, it is always with me. I use it in the kitchen for recipes. I use it, with Knit Companion, for all my knitting. With Knit Companion, I make notes to myself, I keep up with the rows and repeats. I know I could knit without it, but I surely hope I don’t have to try it. In my ever aware state of readiness, I have all my upcoming knitting patterns on my iPad mini. The last time we had a thunderstorm predicted, I put several patterns on the iPad mini. In fact, I figured I’d go ahead and put all the patterns that I’m planning to do in 2015 on there. If there’s no power, I can charge it with a solar charger so I could just sit and knit without ever missing a beat. What I didn’t count on was the iPad breaking!
I can back up Knit Companion to Drop Box . . but it’s been weeks . . more like months . . since I’ve done that.
Yesterday I finished Carabe . . thank goodness before the iPad broke! Last night I was working on a different pattern, it was time for dinner, I sat the iPad down on the side table, and we ate. Once the kitchen was clean and I was read to start knitting again, I picked up the iPad, hit the wake up button, a few squiggly lines went across the screen and . . it was dead! Gone! Nothing!
It would have been real simple just to get online, get the pattern from Ravelry but . . our internet was down! No cell phone, no home phone, no TV, no internet and now . . no knitting. I was so frustrated. I kept waiting for the electricity to go off . . what else could go wrong? 🙂
I did light a candle when I went in the bathroom to take a shower . . just in case! I didn’t want to be trying to get out and get dressed in the dark, but the power stayed on.
This morning I called Apple. The mini was purchased in May so it’s still under warranty. I didn’t have time to finish the process with Apple but they’ll call me back this afternoon and we’ll get to the bottom of what’s wrong with this one and if they can’t fix it, they’ll replace it.
At lunch . .
Vince: Let’s run to Walmart and get you another iPad.
Me: No, it’s under warranty. Apple will fix it or replace it.
Vince: Don’t you want a backup?
Me: No . . what do YOU want to buy? There has to be a reason for this generous offer!
No, we did not get another iPad. We’ll get this one working or replaced and life will go on and I have learned to do weekly, if not nightly, backups for Knit Companion to Drop Box.
I’m still smiling — Boots is good. Rita . . maybe not so much but that’s a story for the next blog post! I will just say that I’m glad she’s a small dog because I do believe she’s part devil dog. Vince said “You can see why her former owners yelled at her!” 🙂

Thanks for the heads up, I never back up knit companion to drop box, I’d better start!
JudyL says
Oh yes . . you’d better start! On Ravelry now, there’s a good discussion with some instructions for backing up in the KC area.

I have a mini! Never knew about dropBox! I need to check out how to use it! I am glad Apple is replacing the mini! Glad Boots and other animals are good!!!
JudyL says
I had backed it up several months ago but not recently. Wish I had!
sharon says
Did you reboot it?
Cindy b says
My sons iPad does that. Try slapping the back of it. I do that and I comes back on. Sounds weird, but it works!
JudyL says
I’m not much into slapping expensive electronics, especially when they’re under warranty. I’ll let Apple replace it.
Carolyn says
I want to know how to save a pattern on it! I love the Ipad, when the ads get to me on blogs there is a ‘reader view’ at the top and I can click on that.
But really How do you save things on an apple?
JudyL says
Apps!
Carolyn says
Really? which app can I save a pattern with?

When our vet gave us the little terrier they had just rescued we were told his name is “Rascal”. It didn’t take us long to figure THAT one out. He was less than a year old and had a rascally glint in his eye! It is over a year now and the glint is still there! He is indeed a rascal and we love him dearly … and the feeling is mutual. He is a Rascal … but in a very good way!

So glad it was still under warranty, Judy! Also happy that Boots is feeling better. I hope he continues to do well. I feed my cats Taste of the Wild food (dry). It’s expensive, but there isn’t much junk in it. I do have to sprinkle a little Benefiber over it, or things get a little backed up for the kitties, but they seem to like it well and the vet says they are very healthy cats with very glossy fur. I hope you find something that works well for Boots. Can’t wait to hear what Rita’s up to!
