You may remember that last year (I looked back on the blog and I wrote this post when it happened – July 7), I was outside with Oscar and a dragonfly came by and was playing with him. The dragonfly would swoop down, get Oscar’s attention, fly around, Oscar would chase it, the dragonfly kept coming back and doing that over and over. Oscar was on a leash and I wanted Vince to see it so I took Oscar inside, got Vince to come out and see it; the dragonfly was still there and kept playing with him.
I probably should get out more but I think that was one of the funniest, most fascinating things I’ve ever seen. All summer I’ve been hoping it would happen again. The dragonflies have been back for a few weeks and every time I’d be out with Oscar, I’d hope they would see him and come to play. They didn’t . . til yesterday. There were two of them and they were giving Oscar a workout. He couldn’t decide which one to chase so he was after both of them. It was so hot out there and Oscar was running and jumping and I was afraid he was going to get overheated. After about 15 minutes, I brought Oscar back in but an hour or so later, Vince came downstairs and I wanted him to see it so we went back outside and two of them again came to play with him. I’m not sure if it was the same two . . there are dozens of them out there but two of them played with him for at least 15 minutes again.
I hope they come every year and, as much as I hope Oscar grows out of some of his craziness, I hope he always wants to play with those dragonflies.

My Irish setter does the same thing, with dragonflies, and butterflies. She chases them all afternoon long (if we let her stay out—it’s too hot). We found a squirrel for her, trying to show it to her, and about that time a butterfly swoops down, no momma gotta get the flutterby. I hope neither of our pups outgrow chasing dragonfies that is so cute.

I have never had a dog that would do this. It’s so fun to watch. The dragonflies enjoy it. Oscar loves it and is constantly watching for them. Unfortunately, he chases all bugs – wasps, bees – anything that moves. As soon as Vince cuts the grass, the clover starts growing and blooming again, the bees move in and Oscar will catch them and immediately starts shaking his head trying to get the stinger out but he never yelps or complains and . . he never stops catching them.

It’s good to see that nature has a sense of play!

Never thought about it that way but you’re right. In Texas I used to love watching fawns playing in the grassy areas.

It is wonderful that the dragonflies seem to love it and enjoy it as well how fantastic

Several times yesterday afternoon he was a bit too energetic and I went out with him to see if they would play. One came for a minute or two but then flew away. I was so hoping to get to see it again.

I love to look for things in nature that make me laugh. I startled a deer in my yard the other day, and it almost turned a summersault trying to get away. A couple of weeks ago there was a squirrel on my neighbor’s hip roof. It was sprawled out belly down, all four legs sticking straight out on the edge ridges. At first I thought it was dead, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to tell my neighbor there was a dead squirrel on her roof… Finally it sat up, shook itself a little, scratched an itch and scampered off. It was just deeply asleep! It was funny the way it was sprawled out though!

Those two things had to be so funny. Can you imagine if you had told your neighbor there was a dead squirrel, then she went out there and awakened it? 🙂
I try to be aware of things like that but I know I miss so much.
