Next weekend (May 6 – 8), I will have Addie. That Sunday is Mother’s Day and she will be home that afternoon. Then the next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. In the past we have given gifts every day that week.
Here are things I’m thinking about for this year:
- There’s a nice nursery in their town where everyone shops. I don’t know if the teacher would like a hanging basket, an inside plant, an outside plant, a fruit tree . . so I’m going to see if they have gift certificates. Addie and I can stop by there Friday on our way out of town.
- A gift card to Hobby Lobby. Teachers probably buy a lot of classroom stuff there, plus, who doesn’t like to decorate from Hobby Lobby.
- If Addie knows her favorite restaurant, we can get a gift card from there. I think Addie has told me she likes Chick-Fil-A.
- A gift card to Starbucks or the local coffee shop if she likes coffee.
- I think Addie has told me she loves some kind of drink from Sonic so maybe a Sonic gift card. (But, that could be last year’s teacher and I’m not remembering correctly).
Anything else you can think of? I only need five gifts but if any of you have other ideas, that would be great. I can present those to Addie and she can make the decision which five she wants to do.
We’ll also get a gift for Nicole for Mother’s Day. Addie will probably want to get her something from the plant store or something from Bath & Body Works. We won’t have any trouble coming up with a gift for Nicole.
Thank you for anything you can think of and share.

The nurseries are packed with big, beautiful, colorful plants. I bought 3 shallow pots and planted probably 2-4 plants per pot. A fun project with Addie and a gift in the end. My screened in porch is glowing with greenery and some color from geraniums, hanging pots.

My fishier is a teacher and she love the coffee card. She also likes plain visa or Mastercard because they buy from a variety of places for classroom supplies. A mug with a special teacher saying is loved as well

That’s funny about the mug. I have a couple of teacher friends and they get so many mugs.

My sister is a teacher and she’d love a gift card to a restaurant or store she loves. She’d kill a plant in 2 seconds! I don’t think she buys classroom stuff at HL at all. She spends a ton of money at Walmart and Target though. So sweet of you to help with teacher gifts.

Addie’s previous teachers have mentioned how much they spend on school stuff at HL but I’m sure each one is different. I think Addie has mentioned how much she likes Sonic and Chick-Fil-A so I’ll talk to Addie about it before we get anything. The good news is that any gift cards, if she doesn’t want them, she can give them as gifts.

Amazon gift card? What about a nice note? It has a minimal cost (free), and you don’t have to worry about food (dietary restrictions, allergies, likes/dislikes, etc), extra things that could end up being clutter, etc. I teach and I keep the handwritten notes/cards and pictures. Mugs, christmas ornaments, etc I keep very little of..I’ve been teaching for 20 years now, and I don’t remember every kiddo I’ve taught.

I think the gift cards you mentioned are wonderful….

All are great ideas. I love the idea of doing things for the teachers. Sometimes they get no appreciation at all and they do get a lot of complaints!

My niece is a middle school teacher. A box of 72 pencils from Amazon (cheapest) is often her ask. Black Sharpie markers. Post-It-Notes. These are if you’re thinking of saving her money on buying stuff for students

I live in Australia. Do your teachers have to buy their own supplied out of their own funds? Here, though each state may be different, the parents pay a supplies and services charge to the school each year. Cost differs but for primary school our grandchildren’s was about $150. For this they received stationary, scissors, tape , glue sticks etc.
I think it is interesting to see the differences. We also pay school fees but low income, pensioners eyc get a govt issued school card.

Unfortunately, I think in most districts, teachers have to pay for most everything. There may be some reimbursement plan for essentials in wealthier districts. Not to knock sports but for most of the districts where we’ve lived, all the extras get spent on sports facilities/activities.

I’m also thinking supplies or funding for them. A gift card for a place that sells many things (Target/Walmart/Amazon) would give the teacher the greatest choice. I’ve heard appreciation for Office Depot or Staples, also.

I was mostly wanting to get her something for herself or something she would enjoy vs. more money spent on classroom supplies. I’m going to throw out all the options for Addie and let her decide.

Book store gift card?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
I used to buy book store gift cards but now that so many people read books downloaded from the library, I don’t buy book store gift cards any more. I think I’ve bought two books in the last three years and that’s ones I wanted to read NOW and didn’t want to wait for the library to get them or to wait in line for my turn to get them.

I am a retired elementary teacher and I always loved getting a homemade loaf of bread or cookies or something like that as I never had much time to bake when I was actively teaching. And you are an excellent baker so maybe a loaf of your specialty bread in a pretty tea towel?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Great idea. I could make bread Sunday and Addie could take it to her on Monday. I’ll run that one by Addie. Thanks!
Cindy says
I hope Addie likes the idea. Maybe she could help choose or make a drawstring bag to use as the wrapping. Who knows?
