Here’s a closer view of the magnetic ties I use while cross stitching and I only learned about it from watching flosstubes so . . not my original idea.
This is a small hoop and they’re almost too long but we use them to keep the excess fabric from getting in the way. It doesn’t take but a few times to stitch the extra fabric with your stitching to realize you need something to keep it out of the way. A friend uses hair clamps (the kind that look like they have teeth and you mash a little handle to open them) but I found my thread kept getting wrapped into the teeth.
These longer ones are great when using Qsnap frames or with larger hoops but if I see any shorter ones, I’m getting them for the small projects.
An added bonus is that your needle with stick to them too when you want to park your needle.
There are several shapes. These are the ones I like. Someone had some they were showing in a flosstube and they are round and the magnets can slip out of the circle, and they do slip out of the circle so you’re left with two magnets attached to each other and no “tie” holding the fabric back so she recommended not getting that kind.
Someone asked somewhere if the magnets were strong enough to mess up a cell phone and the answer was no but I’m still super careful to keep them away from my phone, tablet and Chromebook.

I may be wrong but I don’t think these would work the same. With the cross stitching, we’re rolling up excess fabric and wrapping the long part of the silicone piece around the rolled up fabric, then the two ends, which are magnets, snap tightly, one on the right side and one on the wrong side, and the long part holds the fabric (kinda by encasing it) to keep it out of the way.
If I’m wrong in thinking these wouldn’t work, please correct me. I have tried them with quilting but am not seeing how they would work with the cross stitching.

I have ones like yours, Judy. I think I found the link on Colorado Stitchers utube. They had 2 different lengths and the shorter ones work best sometimes. I cant think of the name but check Sherrie’s pages. I do love that there is nothing for the floss to get caught on.

I have some like the ones you are using and tied a knot in them to shorten the length. I also have the Sewtites magnets someone else mentioned thinking I could roll or fold the excess fabric close to the edge of the hoop and use the Sewtites to hold it in place along the side of the hoop, but I found the magnetics are not strong enough to hold a couple layers of Aida together.

Thanks for the tying the knot idea. You’re so smart!

I use those large black butterfly clips that you use in the office to hold your papers together.
