Where would I be without my blog readers? Thank you, Teri, for finding and sharing a recipe for pickle juice. Super quick and super easy and I had everything I needed to make a double bath of it.
It works! I used it in another loaf of bread and it worked just fine.
Just yesterday, Vince and I were talking. I understand fear buying but I don’t understand every type of flour in this entire country being sold out. The stores re-stock and it’s gone again. Last night I saw Wheat Montana flour online at Walmart, was going to post it on Facebook that it was available and then it was gone . . within a few minutes. My guess is that in the beginning, there was a wave of people, including myself, who realized we needed more flour. Then there were some who just couldn’t get it so that was the second wave of flour purchases. Then people started talking about how easy and delicious homemade bread is and that was the third wave but honestly, houses across this country must be full of toilet paper and flour.
The good news is that when I got up, I checked the flour at Walmart again. I’m kind of intrigued by how quickly it disappears. They had the Wheat Montana back on the website and it has stayed in stock til mid-afternoon. Either they got a whole lot of it in or people aren’t scarfing it up so quickly. Yeast . . haven’t see that anywhere the last few days.
I hope you’re all doing well and those you love are safe.

I’ve found that sugar is hard to come by in my area. I imagine that there’s a lot of people out there taking advantage of the time off to get some baking done. I know I have as well as my friend’s daughter and my niece have been doing just that!

Flour, toilet paper, and don’t forget 1/4 inch elastic is also all sold out !!!

Open a bungee cord for elastic. They are filled with it.

When I looked at the pickle juice recipe i had to laugh. The flavor of the juice is not from the cucumbers that you are pickling but the various spices that you are using. It seems obvious now!
Judy Laquidara says
Yes. Vince said the same thing. I told him — boiled eggs or cucumbers . . they would taste about the same if you poured the same pickling juice over them.

I wonder if some people are buying flour just because they see lots of other people buying it. The “hoard” mentality drives me crazy.
Judy Laquidara says
It’s just weird that rye, spelt, everything is out of stock. I do believe that’s a whole lot of what’s going on though — everyone else is buying this so I probably should too.
Rita Waldock says
Which of the extras did you add to the pickle juice?
Judy Laquidara says
I’m not sure what you’re asking me.
Rita Waldock says
In the recipe she says “Optional spice ingredients”, and I just wondered which ones did you use of the optional ingredients as I don’t think water and vinegar alone would taste like pickle juice. I also make rye bread that calls for pickle juice and quite often run into the problem of not having any or not enough. Thank you for your help.
Judy Laquidara says
Well, I missed that! I think I put it all in there! 🙂
I did think black pepper (I used peppercorns . . is that what the recipe said to use?) and pepper flakes might be too much so the only pepper I used was the peppercorns.
I’ve never been very good at following directions. Heck, I even put caraway seeds in there because I thought I read that and then realized they weren’t supposed to be in there.

Thanks a million Judy for your help! Next time I make rye bread and don’t have enough pickle juice, I’ll use this recipe.

I’m contemplating making sour dough starter with my last yeast. =)
