I sometimes wonder if these weird things happen to us more than they happen to other people or if just my view of it all is weird.
While in MO last week, I bought a queen size mattress set kinda like the one I bought at that same furniture store in 2007. When we moved to MO, we had a queen size bed in our room and two twin beds in the guest room. Vince’s snoring was getting pretty wild during that time. He scheduled a sleep study but it never happened for some reason. Most nights, I ended up in the extra room in one of those twin beds and they were not very comfortable so I gave those away and bought a Restonic set from the furniture store in MO. I have loved that bed!
When we moved here, we got rid of the master bedroom mattress set and were going to use the Restonic set in the master and since we were renting til we found a house, only one set was good for a while. But . . Vince’s snoring! We needed another bed so we ended up with a rather expensive set and neither of us can remember why we bought that set because we had to order it and never tried it before we bought it.
We’ve had it 8 years and I think it has a 25 year warranty but lately, that mattress has become terribly uncomfortable. Both of us wake up with aches. My shoulder, my knee; Vince’s back. A few weeks ago he began calling about the warranty. Total runaround for a week or so and then finally, someone told Vince they would replace it but the exact model we have is no longer made so they’d give us a comparable model but they were supposed to send him some kind of confirmation and never did.
Today he called back and kinda got the runaround again but in the end, a very nice lady explained that since they couldn’t give us the same set as a replacement, they were going to refund our money – the total amount he paid. I’ll believe it when I see it but we have to do something about our bed.
We’ve tossed around what we should do – buy a new mattress; take the older Restonic set from the guest room and put it in the master; put the uncomfortable newer set in the guest room. That way, when we do move from here in a few years, we can get rid of all the mattresses and start over at the new place . . where ever that will be. Less to move!
The scary thing – the Restonic set in the extra room is where I have all my yarn and all my “stuff” so today . . I’ll be cleaning that room so we can sleep in there and make sure it’s comfortable for Vince. If it is, we’ll switch the mattresses around. If it isn’t comfortable for him, we’ll have to buy another set.
He said “what about the set in the other room?” I told him it’s just a double set. It’s about 6 years old and has only been slept on twice. He said “We sleep close. It may work.” No! Not a chance!
Remember when everyone slept on feather mattresses and didn’t complain? Now I feel like the princess and the pea trying to find the right mattress.

Mattresses are so hard–I have always wished I could spend the night in a store and sleep on one before shelling out the money for one that two weeks after you get it, it’s horribly uncomfortable! We’ve started buying mattresses at Costco–they accept returns up to two years after purchase.

Several of the newer mattress companies have the “100 day warranty” now. You sleep on the mattress for 90 or 100 days and if you don’t like it you can “return” the mattress before the warranty is up. We did that – slept on one mattress for about 30 days and I didn’t like how my body sank into the mattress and my arms would then project above the surface of the bed and dangle off. So we called the company and they refunded our money and removed the mattress. We then went hunting for another mattress and ended up with a tempurpedic. We do have a guest room mattress so we slept on that in the interim.
We were very pleased to discover that our aching shoulders and hips no longer ached on the new mattresses. The previous mattress was about 10 years old.

the only thing comparable to the pain of buying a new bed, is the pain of buying new pillows!

I have needed a new mattress for years, but have been putting it off because it’s so hard to (1) compare and (2) decide. I think the same mattress can have different names depending on the outlet. Also, I keep seeing warnings not to get a too-hard bed, but I *think* I want a hard one. Once during a visit, my bed was so hard I didn’t think I would be able to sleep. I woke up feeling great!
Final problem: I don’t like the idea of foam. There are all-foam mattresses that they advise you to air out for 24 hours before using. I don’t think I want my face, for 1/3 of my life, next to something like that!
So anyway…good luck!

I remember when I was a kid my parents had the same mattress all my life. Then when I was a Senior in high school they bought new beds for me and for them. Their old one was one of the kind with the ticking and no telling how old it was. But I do remember it was very hard and they had those springs under it instead of the box springs they bought with the new mattresses. I only slept on mine for about a year before I married and moved out. We also had the old iron beds that everyone wants now!! But those went to the barn and are probably still there.

We bought a foam topper for our mattress…one with different zones. Amazing the difference that had made for my creaky bones!! I liked it so much I bought one for the guest bed at my daughter’s home!!

Can you put one of those foam things on top – memory foam? Paul bought one for the bed in our 5th wheel, and that was the most comfortable thing except for the years of water-bed sleeping – which I’ll do again someday when I’m on the ground floor again! BTW, for the snoring, I’ve heard that many people have had good luck stopping that by sleeping under weighted blankets. A friend just bought one, for her restless leg syndrome, and she said it’s heavenly for that, and it doesn’t feel like a lot of weight on top of her. That’s all I know about that, but if he isn’t going to have a sleep study, it may be helpful. Paul only snored on his back, so I would just push him over that would be that. Okay, maybe a little whining along with the pushing. LOL
