Monday night, through my tears, I was telling Vince . . we’re never getting another dog!
Vince took Rita out before we sat down for dinner. When they came back in, she had her back leg all hiked up, wouldn’t put any weight on it and was hobbling and gnawing at her leg. The vet’s office closes at 6; this happened about 5:45 but there was no way we could get to the vet before 6 so we called and asked them to wait . . which meant paying the emergency fee but . . at least he waited.
He messed with her legs and then he said “As you know, she has bad knees” (join the crowd!), but no, we didn’t know that.
He said her kneecap had become dislodged or dislocated . . can’t remember what he said. At one point, he got it back in place but when we put her down to walk, she took a few steps then began holding her leg back up. He examined her again and said it was back out of place. He gave her two shots and meds. Short of doing surgery on her knees, he said this will happen from time to time. I asked him if he’s ever seen a three legged blind dog.
How much else can go wrong with that sweet girl? She has the best attitude ever . . or maybe I’m just used to Speck, who has the worst attitude ever. All the time he was poking and bending, and prodding and trimming her nails, and two shots, she never whimpered once. Old Speck would have already had us all bleeding! Rita is such a sweet girl.
On the way home, she could not keep her eyes open. She got on the sofa, fell asleep and was down for the count. I told Vince . . I think I want the meds she got.
Between Speck’s seizure the other night and Rita’s knee . . there have been too many tears cried over my puppies this week.

Itis heck to get old. Not for sissies for sure. I’m sorry for this week of pain you have had. It isn’t good when one of our animals are ill or sick. We feel so bad. They are like babies they can’t tell us what is wrong or where it hurts we just have to guess and take care of them. And to your answer about 3 legged dog. Well I had a 3 legged cat. He did wonderful after having his leg removed. Matter of fact he could run and do more things than ever. And yes it cost me loads to have it removed but was worth the 12 more years with him his name was Peaches don’t ask? He had been caught in a snare and worked 5 days to get out. Which he did and came home the rest is history. So do what you need to do as I know you will ,don’t worry about what people might think. They are your babies now.xxxxxxxoooo’s

Oh, no! Sorry to read this. Hope Rita’s kneecap stays in place and hope she stays comfortable.

My heart hurts for you and the pups. Did he say anything about ace bandage to try to stabilize it until the muscles can tighten back up? Hugs to you and snuggles to the pups.

I feel your pain..I cry over my old boy even when nothing’s wrong. I just cry because he’s 16 1/2 and I know I won’t have him much longer. Makes me so sad…. I’ve sworn I’ll never have another animal but then, if I don’t, no clue who I’ll talk to. 🙁

I’m so sorry for the dog troubles. My heart goes out to you because these are both such sweeties, even Speck, and I know you love them so much. I hope you have a long time yet with them. I have not had a cat since I lost my last one that I loved so much and had for over 13 years. It’s been at least that long since she died. My son has two, and they are sweet, but they remain firmly HIS cats, not mine. I don’t spend time with them, except for an occasional pet when I am downstairs. For exactly all the reasons you know. It’s hard with them. It’s hard without them.

Our just turned 5 year old shih Tzu semi-rescue (from granddaughter’s house) will be having surgery in December or January. She has loose patella’s. Her right rear leg is nearly a grade IV. The left rear is a grade 3. She’s so used to her knee being dislocated, she runs flawlessly on three legs. We are going to get it fixed, though, while she’s young. It’s putting undue stress on her hips. I’m not looking forward to her rehab.
These “free” animals sure cost a lot of money, don’t they?!
Well worth the expense. Hang is there, Speck and Rita!
