When we were in Louisiana, Chad picked up a container of “Almost” Magic Swamp Dust.
He had never tried it and I was a bit apprehensive. After all, nothing tops Slap Ya Mama in my opinion.
You can see that the ingredients are a bit different.
Garlic is the second ingredient in the new stuff. It also has white pepper and I do not like white pepper at all. It also has lemon pepper. I could taste the garlic and lemon pepper but either didn’t taste the white pepper or it didn’t bother me.
You may can see that the Slap Ya Mama has 310 mg of sodium where the Magic Dust has 160, which I think is weird because I’ve always felt like I had to add more salt with Slap Ya Mama . . more so than with some other cajun spices. That’s one of the reasons I’ve liked Slap Ya Mama is because I can season things up quite nicely without it seeming too salty.
Nicole said Chad uses the Magic Dust on EVERYTHING! I can see that because he’s a huge garlic lover and when I taste the spice, the first thing I taste is garlic. When we boiled crawfish in Louisiana, Chad put the Magic Dust in the butter we were using for our potatoes and corn and the garlic really made it delicious.
Magic Dust will never take the place of Slap Ya Mama for me but it’s a nice addition to my spice cabinet.

You have introduced me to so many good things. At the risk of an incredible faux pas, and showing my ignorance of all things cajun, how does Slap yo mama compare to Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning? I love that stuff but have to be careful when the grandkids are here because it gets too spicey for them if I’m not careful.
I like lemon on most everything and appreciate how it lightens up the palate but I’m not a fan of lemon pepper in most cases because of the artificial taste. Penzey’s had a great lemon pepper but I refuse to buy anything from them anymore after they sent emails to their customers criticizing those who voted a Republican ticket. I guess I’ll just stick with adding ground pepper and fresh lemon and quit looking for a shortcut. :/
