We spent almost the entire afternoon outside and oh, how I love being outside. I got all the trees potted and worked a bit cleaning up the garden.
With 17 chickens running around, I almost always had a visitor in the greenhouse.
It was probably a mistake to toss her a tomato but she was happy to get the treat.
The 20 trees were bare root and I planted all of them in 1 gallon pots except for a couple that were too big. I’ll try to keep them in the pots til fall and then plant them in the ground if they seem to be doing good. There ended up being 21 trees and something that was probably a weed but it had a root so I planted it too. The new trees I potted today are:
- 6 Mayhaw – I love mayhaw jelly and the fruit is not easy to find. The fruit is very similar to crabapples.
- 5 Southern Crabapple – They’re so pretty when they bloom and the fruit makes such good jelly.
- 5 American Persimmon – The trees are pretty, with unusual bark but the fruit is so good (and so expensive to buy in the stores!)
- 5 Chickasaw Plums – I think these are very similar to wild plums that grow here so hopefully I can keep these alive.
These are all native Texas trees, and will be a great addition to the trees we already have.

I love mayhaw jelly. Haven’t had it in years. You have reminded me to look around for it!
