I have one Ameraucana hen and she’s with that youngest batch . . unless you count the ones that just hatched but she’s in with the Anconas, the Buff Lace Polish, some of “Wilbur’s kids”, which are Dominiques from our older chickens, one black cochin that I’m still not sure if it’s a rooster or a hen, and a few others that we hatched early last summer. I think they hatched in mid to late May and I knew they were going to start laying soon. Vince fixed up their nesting boxes before I left to go MO and today I went out to check for eggs and myone Ameraucana was sitting on the nest. I just went back out there and there was a greenish egg and a white egg so two of those chickens laid their first eggs today.
The egg is much greener in real life but it’s definitely from the Ameraucana. The smaller white egg on the right top is the other new egg. I believe the Buff Polish lay white eggs, as do the Anconas. Everyone else in that coop will lay brown eggs, I think!
The very dark brown egg on the left side of the photo is from the Marans. We now have white, cream, tan, brown, dark brown and green eggs! I’m a happy chicken mama!

Green eggs and ham?

Congratulations grandma! The first egg…….it must be like watching a child take their first steps! If you got 9 eggs just from one trip to the hen house I hope you like eggs……a lot! The UPS man and the neighbors will be happy too! Do the different colored eggs all taste the same?

We’re getting between 2 and 3 dozen eggs per day. That was my third of four trips to the coops.

Not knowing a single thing about chickens, I am sure they interbreed. So if you have all those breeds in one place, it changes genetics. And you will no longer have true breeds? Right…….?
If I had dogs, it would work like that. So I am assuming it is the same in chicks.
glen: not a breeder of anything

Right, but if we want more chickens, we will take the girls and the boy from that particular breed and move them to the “honeymoon suite” for 30 days before we start collecting eggs to hatch. Supposedly, it takes 30 days to be sure they’re “clean” from the other roosters. I don’t see us adding any more chickens though. That was our plan originally but we had planned to let the new ones run loose in the orchard and we can’t because of the vultures/buzzards so we need less, not more, chickens.

That explains the greenish eggs when I get them from our local veggie/fruit stand. A woman brings eggs in for him to sell. More than once I have had one or two greenish eggs.

I thought for sure, when I saw the post title, that this would be a post about a new bbq grill!! LOL! 🙂

Funny! We have one of those but ours is a different brand and it’s black.

All you need now is pink, yellow and blue and your Easter eggs are already dyed. These eggs are just beautiful. Thanks for showing us.

When I had chickens, I had Welsummers – they laid the most beautiful eggs like your Maran egg there. I miss those eggs, they were just amazing color! And the yolks were BRIGHT orange, just glorious!
