Here are the two blocks that go into the quilt I’m working on for the August Quiltathon:
Not only are these such simple blocks to sew but if they don’t come out totally perfect (I’m sure yours do . . mine don’t always!), square them up and it shouldn’t cause any issues — no points to lose, no intersecting lines that have to match up.
For a more scrappy look, make all the small squares different.
Or, for a little more control, make the corner squares of Block A all the same color for this look:
The blocks will be 9″ finished or 9-1/2″ unfinished.
Block A:
Each block requires:
- 1 – 3-1/2″ yellow square
- 20 – 2″ squares (scrappy)
- 2 – 2″ x 3-1/2″ black rectangles
- 2 – 2″ x 6-1/2″ black rectangles
For this block, it’s ok to use the same color in the 2″ squares as the center square because those won’t be meeting up anywhere.
Block B:
Each block requires:
- 1 – 3-1/2″ yellow square
- 12 – 2″ squares (scrappy)
- 2 – 2″ x 6-1/2″ black rectangles
- 2 – 2″ x 9-1/2″ black rectangles
For this block, avoid using the same color in the smaller squares as will be used in the center square.
Decide how many of each blocks you will need for the size quilt you want to create. For the quilts I showed in the first Quiltathon post, I used 31 A blocks and 32 B blocks. For the smaller quilt, 15 of each the A and B blocks are used.

I also love the scrappy look so this one is perfect! I think I’ll get some black kona cotton today and then I can start cutting the squares.

I need to get some purple stash out of the way. This looks like a great stashbuster project for me. I will be playing along. Of course I am not as fast as you and I will be babysitting on Saturaday morning. I have a project and I have the material. Just will be done slowly. Thank you for your ideas and congrats on the baby. Go ahed and just spoil that new baby.

I’ll be Quiltathoning with you, but I need to work on a couple of in-progress projects that have a deadline. I do want to make this one later though, with my huge bucket of scraps at my side. I’d also cut up some FQs that I don’t like any more. Cut them up small enough, and they will be gorgeous!

I was surprised to see that you decided to continue with the schedule. Thought I understood that you’d delay it since you had lots to do for the new grandbaby… I’ll get going on this with the fabrics I’ve selected later tonight after my kitchen is clean =^.^= We are having a veggie pizza…easy, quick, little to clean up after! i’ll be starting on this tomorrow–got a UFO “Bears in the Cabin” to get into a top first as part of the quilting exposition.
i’ve got all my wonderful fabric (‘Wild Rose” by Blackbird Designs) lovely moss green, rose, pink gingham, and a sprigged ecru, that i’ve been saving forever for ‘something special’ just waiting to be cut up and sewn back together. it’s gonna be soooo purdy!

Judy, thanks for this cute pattern. I am going to make a small one – 25 blocks – for a new baby boy in my family. I will start cutting tonight.

Oooo! I’m so far behind, but I may have to haul out my scrap basket and get playing! This looks terrific. I’ve got one customer quilt I must finish this morning. Did two yesterday (small, but still — two!). I’m getting back in the swing here.
