This quilt was made for the brown monochromatic challenge project. As drawn, it will finish at 71″ x 87″. Making this quilt larger or smaller would be quite easy . . just make more or less blocks and some adjustments to the pieced border blocks. Since it’s a stash quilt made using lots of fabrics, the only yardage I will give is for the borders because I used one dark brown and one medium/light brown for the entire border.
For the borders, you need 1-3/8 yards of the medium/light brown and 3 yards for the dark brown. Additionally, for the binding, you would need 9 strips, which I cut 2-1/2″.
It’s such a simple block, which can be made any size desired. I used 8″ blocks and set the blocks 6 across and 8 up and down. 48 blocks are needed and you will need those to be a variety of light, medium and dark background blocks. If cutting your strips across fabric that is approximately 40″ wide, you will get 4-1/2 blocks per strip set so from two full strip sets, you will get 9 full blocks.
For the light background block, as shown above, cut 1 – 2-1/2″ light strip, 1 – 2-1/2″ dark strip and one 4-1/2″ light strip. NOTE: If you do not want to strip piece, and I did not because I was using a lot of scraps, for each dark background block you will need: Dark Fabric – 2 – 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles and 2 – 4-1/2″ squares. Light fabric – 2 – 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle. For each light/medium background block you will need: Light/Medium Fabric – 2 – 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles and 2 – 4-1/2″ squares. Dark fabric – 2 – 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle.
Cut the strip into 4-1/2″ segments. Flip one of the segments around and sew two segments together to create the block. Do the same thing but switch the light and dark segments to create the dark blocks.
Sew the blocks together into rows, trying to avoid having too many darks or lights congregated together.
At this point, the top should measure 48-1/2″ x 64-1/2″, including seam allowances. If you wish to use the borders exactly as I made them, cut your pieces according to this border chart.

For the pieced border blocks, cut a light and a dark rectangle 1-1/2″ x 4-5/8″ and cut one rectangle 2-1/2″ x 4-5/8″. Make 60 blocks.
For the corner border blocks, from the dark fabric cut 2 – 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ rectangles and 1 – 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle. From the light fabric, cut 1 – 1-1/2″ square and 1 – 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ rectangle. Make 4.
Sew 17 blocks together for the side borders. For the top and bottom border, sew 13 blocks together, together with a corner block on each end. Pay careful attention to the drawing to get the orientation of the blocks correct.
