A reminder . . the scrappy challenge blocks are posted on the 2nd of each month. At the end of January, I should have posted a link box for you to show your blocks but I didn’t so I posted it last night and will post that at the end of each month.
The block for February is Key Lime Pie and probably not a good selection with so many of us trying to eat healthier foods.
Again, you can make your blocks any size you wish. I’ll be making mine 9″ and the instructions below will be for 9″ blocks.
Each block needs:
(1) Four 4 patches. Each square is cut 2″ — 4 squares for each 4 patch for a total of 16 – 2″ squares needed for each block. The 4 patches will be 3-1/2″ unfinished.
(2) Each block will need four partial quarter square triangles that will be 3-1/2″ unfinished.
- For the larger triangles, for each block, cut 2 – 4″ squares. Cut them on the diagonal once to yield 4 triangles.
- For the smaller triangles, for each block, from the background fabric and from the darker fabric, cut 1 – 4-1/4″ square (from each fabric). Cut them each on the diagonal twice to yield 4 triangles per fabric (a total of 8 triangles)
- You should have just a tad extra fabric for squaring up to 3-1/2″. If you want more “wiggle room”, make your squares just a tiny bit larger.
(3) For each block, you will need 1 center square, cut 3-1/2″.
Assemble the block to have a completed block as shown above.
A whole top could be made from these blocks using a regular horizontal row setting.
Or, an on point setting with just 5 blocks and a little tweaking the fabrics around the outer edges of the blocks.
Have fun and hopefully it’s getting easier to use your scraps .. if you were having trouble. This block is a whole lot easier for me . . it seems.

Love those layouts, Judy!! I wish I had more time for this one! The “blocks on point” is my favorite.

Since it is my birthday month and I love Key Lime Pie (Weight Watchers has a good recipe that helps the sweet tooth!) I am going to go dig in my strips and scraps and make several of these! Is it too early to make a doll quilt for my grand-daughter who is 15 months old???? We will see how many come out of the scrap mess! Fun, fun, fun!~

Great choice for this month’s block! Not too easy, but not so difficult as to discourage, thanks Judy. I made a little 10 block wall hanging from last months block, am also making a seasonal block for each month. I don’t blog,, but I’d love to show you a picture, can I email one to you??

Judy – Thank you for hosting the Scrappy Challenge. This month’s block “speaks to me”! I already have fabric picked out for 5 or 6 different blocks, I’m excited to get to work on them!

I really like the blocks on point and the way you bordered them to look like an X. You are so creative. I just love all your work. Thanks for sharing. Dana

Every year there are lots and lots of BOMS and QALs posted and I want to do them all. A friend gave me The Gypsy Wife pattern for Christmas and reading it I realized it was probably a ‘Kitchen Sink’ quilt that morphed. I have been able to make YOUR blocks to try them and fit them into ‘my own’ Gypsy Wife quilt. A win-win! Thanks for all your work on these blocks!
