Do y’all remember when we got Oscar and I thought Dachshunds grew up by the time they were a year old and I couldn’t believe he was still so crazy after his first birthday? Sure enough, like so many of you told me, that second birthday was magical. Oscar calmed down so much but . . Oscar still has a long way to go before he’s calm. He’s doing so much better. Every night he lets me cut one nail and then he curls up on my lap and lets me pet him and love on him for at least half an hour. I now have to “budget” that time into my night because I think Oscar needs that winding down time. Oscar is now 3-1/2 years old.
Cooper . . he’s always been way easier to deal with than Oscar. Cooper’s biggest issue was his bathroom manners. Oscar was 100% trained to go outside for everything by the time he was 5 months old. I think he would explode before he would go in the house. Cooper, on the other hand, it just wasn’t a big deal with him. Even from just a few months old, Oscar would be embarrassed if he went in the house. Cooper . . no! I will tell him NO!! and he looks at me like . . get over it. But . . knock on wood . . I think we’ve turned that corner. As far as I know, it’s been several months since he had an accident.
One thing that would send me over the edge is if my house smelled like doggy accidents but how do you know? You get used to it and don’t even notice it. When Chad comes over, I always ask him . . does the house smell like a dog? He’s the only one who would probably tell me the truth. He tells me no but I still keep wondering.
Yesterday the windows guy was here. I stayed downstairs but Vince told me that Scott came inside and said “What’s your wife cooking?” Vince said “Nothing. She hasn’t cooked today at all.” (I had not cooked breakfast or anything.) Scott said “It smells so good – like some really good spice!” That made me feel good!
I don’t think we’ll ever have another puppy so hopefully if the house doesn’t smell now, it won’t ever.
Back to where I was going with this – Cooper will be 2 on July 17. He’s a sweet boy. He does love to be held and loved on – not for long periods of time but for a few minutes pretty often during the day.
I know this but every day it surprises me how different these two are and how different they both are from my other Dachshunds. They definitely have their own little personalities and I love them both so much!
