Time spent in the kitchen, the garden and cross stitching or knitting is all about on an equal level. I love doing all those things. I feel like cross stitching gives me more to show for my effort. Knitting is a bit slower and looking at a half finished knitting project doesn’t excite me as much as seeing a half finished cross stitching project. The garden grows slowly; cooking is nice but there’s really no end to it. Finish one meal and start thinking about the next one!
Yesterday morning I went out to water the garden and decided to cut some rhubarb before it got too hot. We haven’t had much heat yet but yesterday and today are going to be warm. I lost almost all the rhubarb in the hail storm. I didn’t know if I should pull all the damaged stalks off the plants or leave them because I’ve always heard that I shouldn’t harvest too much at once. I pulled some of the damaged stalks and left some and have gradually gone back and pulled more. My rhubarb patch is only 4′ x 8′ and losing so much in mid-April really cut back on what I’ll get this year. I harvested enough to make 9 half pints of stewed rhubarb and 1 loaf and a mini loaf of Rhubarb lemon bread.

There is a lemon glaze that went on the bread once it cooled. I milled soft white wheat for the bread and it was so good.

After I got the glaze on the bread, I was ready to go downstairs, sit with the dogs and cross stitch. Lunch was not something I was wanting to think about so I grabbed a jar of turkey.

I sliced up some fresh carrots, lightly browned them in a skillet, set them aside; made a light roux, added the turkey, the broth, a little water, the carrots and a jar of chopped celery I had canned a while back. Vince came in and said it smelled like turkey and dressing in the kitchen. I served it all over noodles, and made a salad. Quick and easy but really good meal.
When I made hummus the other day I had added more jalapeno peppers than I normally use so I wanted Vince to taste it before I made more. He said it wasn’t too hot and could use a bit more jalapeno. I’m using store bought peppers and those were mild so if I end up with some really hot ones, even what I used in this last batch could be too hot. I’ll have to taste the peppers and then make a decision how much to use I suppose.
Today I have to go to the dentist – not on my list of fun things to do! I have garlic scapes and asparagus in the freeze dryer. It will be ready to be packaged by the time I get home from the dentist so that may be my contribution to foodsaving today and I may spend the rest of the day cross stitching. Sound like a good plan?
