Most all of my days are really good but today has been super good.
First, I had mentioned that I hadn’t been able to find info about one of my dad’s siblings and my very long time friend, Sheryl, sent me a link to this site that she uses for ancestry type searches. This was the first thing I saw when I looked at email this morning. I immediately went there to check it out and not only did I find out the missing info AND that site had my grandparents’ wedding date which I had not been able to find and the neither my dad nor my aunt knew it when I had asked them. So I’m very happy to have all the info I need for my family registry.
Second, G.E. seems to be working with us on the fridge. It looks like they are going to replace it and IF they do, we certainly cannot complain about that. I believe there are major problems with that fridge but here’s what gets me. They say we need this many inches on both sides of the fridge, that many inches between the back of the fridge and the wall, and so many inches between the fridge and any cabinet above it.
- If you go online and look at most any fridge you find, it has measurements. Those are the measurements from the side of the fridge to the other side; from top to bottom and from back to front. It does not include however much space they say you need, which has increased with the new freon. How are we to know how much space we need.
- We took the measurements we had in to the appliance store to make sure what we wanted would fit. I handed it to the salesman. He agreed that the fridge we got would fit into that space – no mention about extra breathing room.
- The G.E. lady said “That info is provided on the installation guide.” I said . . wait a minute. The appliance store’s installation guys came out, installed the fridge, plugged the fridge in and hooked up the ice maker. As they left, they handed us all the papers that might have given those numbers. Kinda after the fact, huh?
I was telling the lady that the appliance stores should be telling us if extra space is needed and if the installation people are installing the fridge in spaces that are too small and not telling us or refusing to do it, then all this should be on them. But the main problem seems to be that the fridge has a “closed system”. It had to be opened up to replace the compressor and now, not another repairman will touch it since it has already been opened up once. That is why they seem to be going to replace it – because it still isn’t working correctly and neither us nor any of the G.E. people can find any of their people within about a 100 mile radius who will work on it.
All I can say is be very careful what appliances you buy these days and if you can wait, you may want to wait because I don’t think this “new” freon is going to be around forever. It seems to be a total nightmare. The appliance repair guy we’ve used here will not even work on anything with the new freon.
Third, we had a heck of a hail storm either Monday or Tuesday – I think Monday. I was so afraid it was going to break our front windows. I was at a friend’s down the road yesterday and she said several people in the neighborhood have had their roofs checked and they all are damaged and need to be replaced. I called State Farm, thinking our hail damage deductible was about $10k but that must have been our previous insurer because with State Farm, it’s about $3K. High but not nearly as bad as $10k. The State Farm lady was super, super nice. She gave me the names of four roofers who work often with them. One is a roofer who sponsors my favorite local weather guy’s YouTube channel. I called him, another super nice guy and they will have someone out Monday to look at our roof.
Fourth, I mentioned that I had been having knee issues. It’s the same knee I had trouble with in Texas. I made an appointment with the Mercy orthopedic group, which happens to be in Kansas but actually easier and closer for us than going to the Joplin Mercy complex. We went there yesterday, I got a shot in my knee and last night was the first night in probably a month that I’ve slept all night without waking up with knee pain. Today I can walk, I can bend my knee. I have been active today and have had zero pain. There may be a knee replacement (or two) in my future but I’m very happy with how my knee feels now.
I guess with my knee pain and lack of sleep, and overall feeling bad because I was tired, I’ve been quiet. Today I was back to being the energizer bunny and talking non-stop. At dinner, Vince looked at me and said “You haven’t stopped all day – you haven’t stopped moving, giving orders or talking!” Giving orders – two “orders”! First, I said “I think I’m going to plant the new raspberries” and he said “You cannot because there are too many rocks. I’ll dig the holes.” Does that sound like an order to you? No . . I could have tried it and if I couldn’t do it, then he could have but anyway . . Order #2 – I said . . Since it didn’t rain today, could you please cut the back grass (which is very small and he does it with the push mower) because the dogs walk with their noses to the ground, sniffing for anything they can eat (worm jerky) and while they’re walking, their ears are like little funnels scooping up moisture and then there’s ear infections to deal with. Anyone want to try to put drops in Oscar’s ears? No . . you do not! So, he dug the two holes and cut the back grass.
I got the raspberries planted, planted some of my medicinal plants – feverfew, all heal, lemon balm, astragalus. I planted more zinnia seeds, planted two 4 x 4 beds of beets. Yes, it’s been a good day.
Oh, Vince asked for cookies and I made them. I’m thinking now . . did he ASK for cookies or did he DEMAND cookies? 🙂

These are the Amaretti cookies that we both love . . too much! They’re easy to make. The recipe doesn’t make a ton and they fit on one cookie sheet so they’re pretty quick to make. I like them better the next day. They’re more crunchy on the outside the next day.
