Have you ever seen so many recalls on food? Maybe it’s on everything but I’ve mostly paid attention to food recalls. This morning I saw one for cookies and it’s because there’s milk in the cookies and it was left off the ingredient list. I can understand the why – if you’re allergic to milk and read the label and see no milk, you buy them and then have a reaction. But, I would think any major company would be very meticulous about listing every ingredient. Leaving milk out of the list of ingredients for cookies seems almost like leaving flour off the list of ingredients for the breads I make. Yes, I would do something like that but these companies should have systems and checks and backup systems and checks.
It’s crazy. I’ve never seen so many recalls and I’m sure I don’t see them all. If you go to the FDA site that lists food recalls, there are many that are listed for undeclared allergen. It would make me very nervous if I or someone in my family had a very serious food allergy.
There are pages and pages of food items on the recall lists. Many are prepared foods and we don’t buy those very often but there are enough vegetables, nuts, cinnamon, fruit – things we do buy, to make me feel a bit uncomfortable about the foods we do b uy.
Maybe it’s always been this way, maybe the reporting/checking has gotten better but it makes me think twice about the things I buy.

I did see the one about cinnamon and tossed my generic brand and bought a name brand that was stated to be ok.

That’s what I was thinking – I have never seen so many notices coming through so quickly and it’s been happening for months. It may just be that they’ve stepped up the reporting and it was happening all the time we just didn’t notice but it’s a little concerning.

At least if it’s for allergens, I’m ok, since I don’t have any food allergies and I rarely have guests for meals. When it’s a recall for listeria, or salmonella, etc. it gets very concerning! I am glad they get those recalls out as fast as they can. I’ve been lucky that those recalls are rarely for things I buy.

When I see a recall notice just being published for a product that was already being sold months ago I can only shake my head. By the time the notice is public how many people have already eaten the product?

Not for everything but for a lot of things, I always buy them ahead and check for recalls. Dog food, canned foods, etc. A lot of times, the recall is because of ingredients left off the list and since we don’t have allergies, I don’t worry about those things. We’ve totally given up on buying pre-made salads in bags and greens in the store. I grow microgreens and lettuce, parsley and basil in the basement with grow light if I can’t grow them in the garden.

Right! I called to order propane the other day and it had been about three years wince we got it and the lady said “Do you still have the same credit card we have on file?” I laughed and said “I wish. We have to get new credit cards at least three times a year because of fraud/hacking.” One day this week, Vince got a letter that Medicare denied his claim for blood work because it was done in a lab not approved by Medicare .. in New Jersey! He has NOT been to NJ but they did have his real doctor’s name on the bill.
