I’m still stitching on Rejoice Evermore by With Thy Needle. I love it and am enjoying stitching it. I took it to sit & stitch at the local cross stitch shop Saturday and got a bit more stitching done.
I’ve kinda hit a snag.
Those open vertical spaces are on the larger birds’ wings. The called for floss is to use one strand of the more aqua floss and one strand of the greenish floss (both are used in the bird but may be hard to see) and, using both those strands, fill in those vertical lines with satin stitch. I’m using one strand of Vikki Clayton Silks so two strands will be a good bit thicker.
The cover photo kinda looks like each vertical strip is just a long stitch, straight from the bottom to the top. On Instagram, I saw some that looked that way too. Not sure how I feel about that.
Here are the options I think I might like:
- Use a color of floss (also Vikki Clayton) that is just a tad darker and fill in those lines with regular cross stitches.
- Use a floss that’s a bit darker and thicker (au Ver a Soie or NPI silks) and make regular cross stitches.
If I tried the two strands vertical stitch, it will be easy to remove so I may not fill in until I’ve stitched another bird, then stitch one with the long satin stitch and stitch the other with one of the other silks.
I the end, it’s my piece and whatever I like is what I’ll do but I don’t want to overthink this and then wish I had done something else.
Any thoughts?

-what if you use one color as the bottom part of the X and the other color for the top? I’ve done this when I was using one thread for a project and it gave the impression of variation/mixed colors.

The satin stitch will likely give the piece more depth, but you would probably just need to try it and see what you think.

I would try the satin stitch, but if I can’t make it look right I would just go with regular cross stitch in a color I like and not worry about it. It will look great either way, Vikki’s silks are the best.
