Yesterday Vince and I were talking about the things we do that are kinda weird to most people. I’m thinking it may not be as weird as we think because more people may do some of these things and we just don’t talk about it but I thought I would share some of these things with you.
Mosquito Repellant:
We’ve had so many mosquitoes this year. It was a rainy spring and we could not go outside for 5 minutes without getting numerous bites. A friend recommend Zevo and it does work great. Also, Avon Skin So Soft body oil works great but with the dogs, especially Cooper, we go out for 5 or 10 minutes many times a day. Whether I was using Zevo or Skin So Soft, I’d come back inside and before I could start stitching again, I’d have to wash my hands and arms with soap and water to keep from getting anything on the stitching project.
I found this recipe for homemade mosquito repellant and it isn’t greasy and worked great. It has witch hazel, water and eucalyptus essential oil. I don’t mind the smell of eucalyptus but Vince doesn’t like it so I used tea tree oil and it worked fine. I didn’t feel like I had to come inside and wash my hands and arms after using this.
I cannot say how long this spray would be effective but when I would spray it early in the morning, I wouldn’t spray it on me again til after lunch and that lasted through the rest of the day.
One recipe, which was 1/3 cup witch hazel, 1/3 cup water and 40 drops of essential oil and it lasted me for almost two months. I think Vince was using it too but I’m not sure.
Body Oils/Lotions:
I am not including links to these products because they are available many places online, many different brands. When I need these products, will get online and see who has the lowest price, always factoring in the cost of shipping.
When I had gone to the Azure Standard pickup location in June, a friend there looked at my finger. It was either just before or just after I had the stitches removed and she commented that it was going to leave a nasty scar. When I was at the pickup location this week, she looked at it and was really shocked that the scar is barely visible.
It’s been about 1-1/2 months since the accident and if you didn’t know the scar was there, you’d never notice it. The nail is coming off and I don’t think it’s giving up gracefully so I tried to get a photo where you could see the scar but not see the nasty looking part of the nail. On that side where you can barely see the cut nail, it’s just ugly!! I’m hoping there’s another part of the nail growing behind the cut but so far, I can’t see it and so far, the cuticle is not cooperating! But, the scar looks amazing – much better than I would have dreamed it would look.
When my friend asked what I used on it, I laughed because I wasn’t sure what would be best for the scar so, as soon as the cut was healed enough that I could switch over to treating the scar, I would this list and put something different on it every day. I only used oils that I had on hand already so that included:
- Frankincense EO
- Lavender EO
- Tea Tree EO
- Vitamin E Oil
- Almond Oil
- Coconut Oil
Not on the list but others I used:
- Castor Oil
- Squalene Oil
- Apricot Oil
You wouldn’t need all of these. I have them because I use different oils in lotions and creams that I make.
For those of us who are older, you know how our necks can get very wrinkly. I’ve been using apricot oil on my neck and it really seems to help. It doesn’t have any sunscreen in it so I will put it on early and then before I go outside, I’ll put my regular daily face cream on my neck.
This is another oil I’ve been using. It can be ordered directly from Plant Therapy but there are other places online that carry it.
My hair had been looking . . dead! No shine, the color (natural) seemed dull. I had started using this Hair Therapy oil about a month ago. In the beginning, I would put about 5 drops in the cream rinse but then I decided to use it after rinsing the shampoo out of my hair – just massage it in, let it sit for a couple of minutes, rinse it out and it works so great.
Remineralizing Tooth Powder
I’ve used this for a while but just needed to make more yesterday. This is the recipe I use. I do not use xylitol nor do I add essential oil. I will use an essential oil after brushing – different ones – usually whatever I see first. You can see a list of good oils for oral hygiene here.
Anti-Itch Cream
This is a concoction I don’t even measure. I will use a bit of coconut oil – maybe a couple of tablespoons, add maybe a teaspoon of turmeric powder and stir it until it’s well mixed. That’s great for putting on bug bites and whatever may be itching.
Do you use homemade remedies like these? If so, please share some that you love.

I made some dandelion salve a couple summers ago. Good for all kinds of dry itching sore skin. I gave quite a few little containers away to friends. Yesterday I wished I had some and realized I was all out. Too late for dandelions this year. The instructions I followed are here.

Thank you for sharing the recipe. A couple of years ago, I made several things with dandelions. We always have a bumper crop. I’ll try this recipe in the spring. Appreciate it!

Oh Judy you are lucky you still have that Finger tip!! I do hope the nail will come back in nicely. I once lost a toe nail and I was very fortunate that it came back perfectly( I tried to move a teak table with my toe, not on purpose!) I just love reading about your homemade remedies, my Grandmother made all kinds of homemade remedies. We used to tease her and tell her she was a witchdoctor, and she would tell us all the different times her lotions and potions saved us in one way or another. Some were so smelly even the dog wouldn’t play with us!!

It also dries up break outs. I put it on at night and wash off in the morning. Helps this 70 year old lady not look like a teenager. lol

You have that issue too? I thought I was the only one who deals with that. Thanks for that tip.

I’ll have to get some toothpaste. We don’t buy it because we don’t want the fluoride and toothpaste without fluoride seems to be rather expensive. But, I will get some to help with bug bites. Thanks!
