I didn’t get the fridge I wanted but I knew from the way Vince was talking last night, that was not the fridge we would get.
Vince found a GE fridge at Lowe’s in Carthage that he wanted but we have a similar GE in the garage (it came from the Texas sewing room) and the handles on these bins crack easily. Vince is a bit rough with things and both handles were cracked within the first year. I hate having broken things and every time I open that fridge, those cracked handles bother me.
Lowe’s in Carthage didn’t have many “garage ready” fridges so we went to Home Depot in Joplin. I had checked on the internet on the way to Home Depot and found this one. It’s a 24 cubic foot L.G. and it’s garage ready. We have the exact same fridge in a 20 cubic foot model in the basement garage.
The handles on the bins are more like “handles” and there’s an opening to put your fingers into so you’re not pulling on a piece of flimsy plastic.
The only thing I don’t really like about this one is the “handle”. There isn’t really a handle . . it’s an indention you stick your hand into and pull. That’s ok except about 90% of the time, my hands are full and it’s so much easier to stick a finger or two in a handle to open the door. That cut out area is higher up and not as easy for me to open when my hands are full.
For our extra fridges, I prefer to use “bins” like these and these. I also like these for meats. When I go over my menu for the week, usually on Saturday for the following week, I will pull out the meat for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and put it in the fridge. Sunday is often spaghetti and meatballs and that’s in a container so I’ll let I’ve in the kitchen fridge but say I need chicken breasts for Monday, steak for Tuesday and ground beef for Wednesday. I can put all that in the “meat bin” and let it defrost in the fridge. If it leaks in the bin, that’s ok . . I can wash the bin and not have to do a major cleanup in the fridge.
When Vince and I were discussing whether to get a fridge with a freezer or without a freezer, I asked him if it would be ok if the freezer in the new fridge was only for frozen meals like meatloaf, soup, sauce and meatballs – whatever I’ve mixed up, divided into meal size portions and frozen to be defrosted, heated and eaten. He agreed so I agreed to go with the fridge with the freezer.
It will be here May 20 and once I get it all set up, I’ll share pictures. I am glad the fridge decision has been made and we can move on to more fun things! 🙂

I love them. At our house, things can turn into a total mess very easily and those bins help so much. I don’t use them in the kitchen fridge because mostly it’s jars of stuff in there – ketchup, mayo, juice, tea, Kool aid, lard, BBQ sauce, etc. We keep all the fresh veggies, lemons, fruit, cheese, etc. in the garage fridge because that stuff sometimes makes our ice taste funny. Probably all in my head but that’s how we do it.
