I know there are a lot of dog posts on here lately but they are a huge part of my life and, other than an hour or so in the garden, a bit of cooking, these days my time is mostly spent with the dogs and Boots.
Yesterday was the “sit and stitch” day at the local-ish cross stitching shop. I like the ladies who attend these sessions. Yesterday, which was only my second time to go, there were three ladies from Joplin that came and I really liked them. I like them all really.
You would think that when I leave the house and the dogs are in the crate for a big chunk of the day, they would be extra energetic but I think they both panic when I leave them and they are worn out when I get home. Vince had been outside working so they were in the crate a bit part of the day. I got home about 3:30 and Vince was downstairs watching a movie and the dogs were loose.
As soon as I sat down to stitch last night, both of them fell asleep almost instantly.
Cooper immediately had his eyes rolled back with his eye partially open and all you could see was a little sliver of white. That looks so weird. I’ve never seen Oscar sleep with his eyes not all the way closed but Cooper does it often. Cooper is such a funny, easy going dog. He will be 9 months old next week!
Question for you dog owners – They say give them puppy food for one year. When we got him in October, I bought five bags of Hills Science puppy food. This morning I opened the 5th bag. It took about 6 months to go through four bags so, based on that, we should finish this 5th bag by about June 1. He’s pretty much eating only about half of what he was eating as a 2 – 4 month old puppy so I’m guessing this bag of dog food may end up lasting til about July 1. It isn’t going to hurt anything to switch him to the food Oscar eats if it’s just two or three weeks before he turns 1 year old, right?
They’re just like humans – always wanting what someone else has. Oscar will about knock me down trying to get to the food Cooper has left in his bowl. When I tell Cooper it’s time to eat, he goes and sits by Oscar’s bowl and if Cooper finishes his food and I let him out of the bathroom (where he eats) while there’s food left in Oscar’s bowl, he tries to eat it all before I can stop him. Funny boys!

I would start him on Oscar’s food when you the last bag. I wouldn’t buy another bag. I think you are smart to feed them separately, so you don’t have any food aggression.

Yes, some days Oscar seems like he would be aggressive if Cooper got into his food but since I feed Cooper in the bathroom, if I forget and go in there while Oscar still has food, Cooper will run to it and start gulping it down. I usually panic because I’m afraid Oscar is going to be aggressive but Oscar has always stood there and done nothing. Doesn’t mean it will always be that way so I do try to keep them apart. Oscar will go after Cooper when there are chew bones involved so they each go into their crates with the chew bones for about half an hour a couple of times a day. It gives me a break and they love those Yak Chews.

Do you mix the foods gradually so they get used to new food? I would do that for about a week, adding more of Oscar’s food into Cooper’s food until he is finally eating the same food as Oscar.

The treats they both get is actually little morsels of Oscar’s food. Cooper manages to get Oscar’s food way more often than he should so I’m not real concerned about it but I will probably mix it half and half for a few days.
