Last night I saw the cutest thing ever! We were watching the news and there’s a school in Grove, OK where the 2nd graders were reading to dogs and cats at the animal shelter. The children were sitting on the floor on little mats. The dogs were in individual “pens” that were about 2′ from each child. The dogs were all sitting on mats or blankets and they all looked like they were intently listening to the children reading. One of the little girls I saw turned the book around to show the dog a picture . . just like the teacher would when reading to the students.
It was the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time. I told Vince . . I want to make a donation to that school! I want to buy gifts for this kids!
It was such a happy story and to see those children enjoying reading, and obviously feeling like they were doing a great job and doing something great for the dogs . . it really made my night!
You can read the article here on the website of the news station.

There are programs through the library that do this. It really helps children learn to like reading and it is also good for the animals. I love this so much!

Our library does this once or twice a month for the kids because they aren’t afraid the dogs will “judge” them on their reading. The idea of reading to the dogs at the shelter truly sounds like it is a great service to the dogs also!

One of my friends does this at her local library. It’s especially good for kids with learning disabilities. The dog listens without judging, and the dog’s owner sits quietly and doesn’t interact. There are several programs, all requiring training for owner and dog.

That is awesome, anything to help children learn, and improve their reading skills. Isn’t it great when some teachers think outside the box to help their children!! We need to support our teachers more, they are teaching the future!!

Yes, and a child who might think they don’t like reading may fall in love with reading while having a cute puppy as their audience.

I saw that news story, too. It was so touching. And, definitely a wonderful lesson for all of us.

I have heard of children reading with “therapy dogs” but this was new to me. I think dogs in this type of situation are so lonely that this must be soothing for them. It’s good to teach children about being kind to animals also! Thanks for sharing this Judy!
