We planted four or five chokecherries either in late 2021 or early 2022 and this is the first year they’ve bloomed.
I’m so happy to see them blooming. If they produce enough “cherries”, I’ll make chokecherry jam.
We have three lilacs that we planted and they’re small but look like they will have lots of blooms. If so, I will make lilac jelly.
I hope the little trees and shrubs keep me busy in the kitchen this spring.

Lilac jelly is new to me. How does it taste?

Me too, mine are just starting to bud.

I think it tastes like the flowers smell but that could be in my head. It’s very mild and has a floral taste – not nearly as strong as a fruit jelly. It’s great on biscuits but in something like peanut butter and jelly, the flavor would be overpowered by the peanut butter.

What beautiful little blossoms on the chokecherry. I had to look up lilac jelly – I had never heard of it before – and was curious as to what color it turns out. I was surprised to see it in colors from yellow to light lilac to darker reddish-purple. Very interesting.

If you keep the jelly more than a month or so, it will almost always turn yellowish green.
